ريحُthe wind الشَمالِof the north أَتَتcame بِريحِwith the scent of شَمالِShamal
سَحَراًbefore dawn فَهاجَتthen it stirred ساكِنَthe stillness of البَلبالِthe anguish
The north wind came bearing Shamal's scent,
The north wind brought a northern breeze
before dawn, and stirred the anguish that had lain still.
In the dawn, so it stirred the nightingale
واهاًah! بِماfor what جاءَتit came بِهِwith it واهاًah! لَهُfor it
أَحيَتit revived بِهِwith it ماwhat ماتَhad died مِنof أَوصاليmy limbs
Ah, for what it brought! Ah, for it!
Alas! For what it brought, alas for it!
With that scent it revived what had died in my limbs.
It revived what was dead of my limbs
فَجَزاؤُهاso its reward حُبّانِtwo loves حُبُّlove بَاِسمِهاfor its name
مِنّاfrom us وَحُبٌّand love عَنfor جَميلِbeautiful فَعالِdeeds
Its reward is two loves: one for its name,
So its reward is two loves for its beautiful name
from us, and one for the beauty of its deeds.
From us, and love for its good deeds
وَلَهاand it has عَلَيناupon us فيin مُوافَقَةِthe matching of اِسمِهاits name
هَقٌّa right (likely intended) جَديدٌnew رِعيَةَout of regard for اِسمِthe name شَمالِShamal
For its name's accord with hers, it has upon us
And it has a right over us to agree with its name
a fresh claim, in honor of the name Shamal.
A renewed yearning for the name of the north
وَلَقَدand indeed رَضيتُI was content بِهاwith it طَبيباًas a physician حاذِقاًskilled
يَشفيheals الجَوانِحَthe ribs مِنof جَوىًlove's anguish وَغِلالِand burning thirst
Indeed, I have accepted it as a skilled physician,
I was pleased with it as a skillful doctor
healing the breast of heartache and burning thirst.
That heals the souls from love sickness and shackles
وَبِهاand through it غَنيتُI had no need عَنِof العِبادِpeople رَسولَةًas a messenger
تَفريcleaves القِفارَthe deserts وَماand does not تَنيflag لِكَلالِfrom fatigue
As my messenger, it frees me from needing other people,
With it I became needless of messengers
cleaving the deserts, never flagging from fatigue.
To uncover the deserts and what desire hides
تُنبيكُمُit informs you أَنّيthat I عَلىupon عَهدٍa pledge لَكُمto you
وَاللَهُand God يَشهَدُbears witness ليfor me بِصِدقِto the truth of مَقالِspeech
It tells you that I keep my pledge to you,
It reminds you that I am still true to you
and God bears witness for me to the truth of my words.
And Allah bears witness to the truth of my words
عِفتُI shunned الحَرامَthe forbidden وَلَمand did not يَكُنbe مِنamong عادَتيmy habits
فِعلُdoing الحَرامِthe forbidden لَكُمfor your sake وَكُلُّand every هَلالِlawful pleasure (likely intended)
I shunned the forbidden—it was never my habit
I shunned sins and it was not my habit
to do the forbidden—and, for your sake, every lawful pleasure.
To commit sins for you and each new moon
وَحَمَيتُand I shielded عَينيmy eye كُلَّevery حُسنٍbeauty رائِقٍalluring
وَعَقَلتُand I hobbled عودَthe old camel of عَرامَتيmy unruliness بِعِقالِwith a tether
I guarded my eye against every alluring beauty,
And I guarded my eyes from any beautiful temptation
and hobbled the old camel of my unruliness with a tether.
And restrained the pole of my tent with ropes
وَرَفَضتُand I rejected لَذّاتَthe pleasures of الحَياةِlife وَطيبَهاand its sweetness
مِنof مَلبَسٍclothing أَوor مَطعَمٍfood أَوor مالِwealth
I rejected life's pleasures and its sweetness,
And I rejected the pleasures of life and its goodness
whether clothing, food, or wealth.
Of clothing, food or money
وَإِذاand when خَلَوتُI was alone وَلَمand did not أَجِدI find ليfor myself مُسعِداًa companion in grief
إِلّاexcept الشُؤونَthe tear ducts بِساجِمٍwith a flowing stream هَطّالِpouring copiously
And when I am alone and find no one to share my grief
And when I'm alone and find no one to console me
save the tear ducts with their streaming downpour,
Except misfortunes with long dark nights
أَلقَيتُI cast ثَوبيmy garment فَوقَover وَجهيmy face باكِياًweeping
وَجَعَلتُand I made مُعتَمَدَthe resting place of الجَبينِthe brow شِماليmy left hand
I cast my garment over my face, weeping,
I throw my garment over my face crying
and make my left hand the resting place of my brow.
And make my forehead lean on the north
قَدhad كُنتُI been قَبلَbefore فِراقِكُمparting from you فيin غِبطَةٍbliss
مِنfrom عيشَةٍa life بِكُمُwith you رَخِيَّeasy of البالِmind
Before parting from you, I enjoyed the bliss
I used to be, before we parted, in bliss
of a life with you, untroubled in mind.
Of a life with you, carefree and content
ماwhat لِلنَوىwith separation تَعِسَتmay it come to grief وَأُتعِسَand may be ruined جَدُّهاits fortune
قَطَعَتit cut off رَجايَmy hope وَأَخلَفَتand disappointed آماليmy wishes
What ails separation? May it and its fortune come to grief!
Why did the love become miserable and make its grandfather miserable
It severed my hope and disappointed my wishes.
It cut off my hopes and broke my dreams
شُدَّتwere brought to bear عَلىagainst جَمعيthe two companies of الأَحِبَّةِthe loved ones عَنوَةًby force
يَومَon the day of الخَميسِThursday ضُحاًin the forenoon سَفينَthe ships of أُوالِAwal
Against the two companies of loved ones were forcibly brought to bear
My loved ones were forced away violently
Awal's ships, on Thursday in the forenoon.
On Thursday at noon the ships of the first party sailed
فَاِستُلَّتِthen were drawn out الأَرواحُthe souls مِنfrom أَجسامِهاtheir bodies
بِالشَوقِby yearning وَهيَwhile they بَعيدَةُfar from الآجالِthe appointed deaths
Then souls were drawn from their bodies
So the souls were ripped from their bodies
by yearning, though their appointed deaths were far away.
In yearning, while still far from death
وَاِستُمطِرَتand were made to rain نُجلُthe wide العُيونِeyes فَأَخضَلَتthen they drenched
وَردَthe roses of الخُدودِthe cheeks بِواكِفٍwith streaming tears هَطّالِpouring profusely
And the wide eyes were made to rain, and drenched
The stars of eyes rained, so they became green
the roses of the cheeks with a streaming downpour.
And the roses of cheeks with continuous downpour
أَمسَيتُI spent the evening بَعدَكَafter you ياO شَمالُShamal تَخَوُّقاًwasting away
أَستَنشِقُI inhale الأَرواحَthe breezes بِالآصالِin the late afternoons
After you, Shamal, I spend my evenings wasting away,
After you left, O North, I remained confused
breathing in the breezes at day's end.
Inhaling spirits with the evening breezes
وَأَحِنُّand I yearn فيin غَلَسِthe darkness of الدُجونِthe gloom مُسَهَّداًsleepless
وَأُواصِلُand I join الإِدبارَretreat بِالإِقبالِto advance
And I pine sleepless in the darkness of the gloom,
And I moan in the darkness of night, lying down
and join retreat to advance.
And spend the night awake until dawn
كَالوالِهِlike the distraught one المَجنونِthe madman إِلّاexcept أَنَّthat فيin
شَحمِthe fat of الجُنوبِthe flanks فَضيلَةًa surplus لِهُزالِfor emaciation
Like a distraught madman—except that in
Like a mad lover, except that in
the fat of my flanks, some excess remains for wasting.
The fat of the south there is virtue in leanness
كَمhow many قائِلٍa speaker شَفِقاًout of pity تَسَلَّtake solace لَعَلَّهُperhaps it
يَسلوsubsides هَواكَyour passion فَقُلتُso I said غَيرِيَsomeone other than me سالِfree of longing
How many have said in pity, 'Take solace; perhaps
How many sympathizers asked if maybe
your passion will fade.' I said, 'It is others who forget.'
They could console your love, and I said: others have tried
كَيفَhow السُلُوُّforgetting love وَقَدand already عَقَدتُI bound عُقودَهاher bonds
بِمَواثِقيto my pledges وَحِبالَهاand her cords بِحِباليto my cords
How could I forget, when I have bound her bonds
How can there be consolation when I tied its knots
to my pledges, and her cords to my cords?
With my covenants and its ropes with my ropes
وَأَجَلتُand I let roam طَرفيmy gaze فيamong العِبادِpeople فَلَمbut did not أَجِدI find
أَهَداًanyone (likely intended) يَفوقُsurpasses جَمالَهاher beauty بِجَمالِin beauty
I let my gaze roam among people, but did not find
And I looked at people, but did not find
anyone who surpassed her beauty with their own.
Anyone more beautiful than it in beauty
عارٌa disgrace عَلَيَّupon me مَتىwhenever أَدَعتُI neglected (likely intended) ذِمامَهاher claim upon me
أَوor رُعتُهاI frightened her فيin الحُبِّlove بِاِستِبدالِby substitution
It would shame me ever to neglect my duty to her,
Shame on me if I let go of its reins
or alarm her in love by taking another in her place.
Or was unfaithful in love by changing
وَمَتىand whenever نَسيتُI forgot فَلَستُso I am not أَنسىI forget قَولَهاher words
صِلناkeep in touch with us بِكُتبِكَthrough your letters رَأسَat the start of كُلِّevery هِلالِnew moon
And whatever I forget, I never forget her words:
And whenever I forget, I cannot forget its words:
'Keep in touch with us through your letters at the start of every new moon.'
"Unite us in your letters at the head of each crescent"
