The languor of eyelids and the sickness they cause;
The languor of the eyelids and their ailments
the restlessness of sides and their aching.
The winds of the south and their calamities

And how much sleeplessness in love has been stirred
And how much vigil for love has stirred him
by beauties’ shunning and their turning away!
The aloofness of the gazelles and their aversion

And a fair-skinned woman whose desertion brings despair,
And a white one whose separation brings despair
yet whose flashes kindle hope of union.
And whose glance kindles hope for reunion

She appeared, and by her glance was laid low
She appeared and I affirmed from her glance
a heart-sick man, his ribs shattered.
The heartsick, aroused from their torpor

So you continued to aim for the most blissful
whose targets outstrip your arrows.
While your arrows flew wide of their marks
