أَصابَتstruck قَلبَهُhis heart حَدَقُthe eyes of الظِباءِthe gazelles
أَصابَت قَلبَهُ حَدَقُ الظِباءِ
وَأَسلَمَand forsook لُبَّهُhis mind حُسنُthe beauty of العَزاءِpatience in grief
وَأَسلَمَ لُبَّهُ حُسنُ العَزاءِ
The gazelles' eyes struck his heart,
And graceful patience forsook his mind.
وَأَقفَرَتِand became desolate المَنازِلُthe dwellings مِنwithout سُلَيمىSulayma
وَأَقفَرَتِ المَنازِلُ مِن سُلَيمى
وَكانَتand they were لِلمَوَدَّةِfor affection وَالصَفاءِand sincerity
وَكانَت لِلمَوَدَّةِ وَالصَفاءِ
And the dwellings grew desolate without Sulayma,
Though once they were abodes of affection and sincerity.
وَطالَand grew long ثَواؤُهُhis stay فيin دِمنَتَيهاher two ruined campsites
وَطالَ ثَواؤُهُ في دِمنَتَيها
فَهَيَّجَso stirred شَوقَهُhis longing طولُthe length of الثَواءِthe stay
فَهَيَّجَ شَوقَهُ طولُ الثَواءِ
And his stay at her two ruined campsites grew long;
So the length of his stay stirred his longing.
وَلَجَّand persisted بِهِwith him الجَفاءُestrangement فَلَيسَso he does not يَدريknow
وَلَجَّ بِهِ الجَفاءُ فَلَيسَ يَدري
أَيَظعَنُwhether he should depart أَمor يُقيمُremain عَلىin الجَفاءِestrangement
أَيَظعَنُ أَم يُقيمُ عَلى الجَفاءِ
And estrangement dogged him, so he does not know
Whether to depart or remain in estrangement.
وَهَلand (question particle) خُلِقَwas created الفَتىa young man إِلّاexcept لِيَهوىin order to love
وَهَل خُلِقَ الفَتى إِلّا لِيَهوى
وَيَأنَسَand find solace بِالدُموعِin tears وَبِالدِماءِand in blood
وَيَأنَسَ بِالدُموعِ وَبِالدِماءِ
And was a young man created for anything but to love
And find solace in tears and blood?
