بَكَتwept أَعيُنُthe eyes of الناسُthe people ليfor me رَحمَةًout of pity
بَكَت أَعيُنُ الناسُ لي رَحمَةً
وَتَقسوand you are harsh عَلَيَّtoward me وَأَنتَthough you are الحَبيبُthe beloved
وَتَقسو عَلَيَّ وَأَنتَ الحَبيبُ
The eyes of the people wept for me in pity,
yet you are harsh with me, though you are the beloved.
حَبيبٌa beloved أَتانيcame to me عَلىdespite بُخلِهِhis stinginess
حَبيبٌ أَتاني عَلى بُخلِهِ
لَتَصغُرَso that they may seem small عِندِيَin my eyes فيهِfor his sake الخُطوبُmisfortunes
لَتَصغُرَ عِندِيَ فيهِ الخُطوبُ
A beloved who came to me despite his stinginess,
so that, for his sake, misfortunes might seem small to me.
أُصانِعُI court the favor of مِنfor أَجلِهِhis sake أَهلَهُhis family
أُصانِعُ مِن أَجلِهِ أَهلَهُ
فَكُلٌّso each one لَدَيَّto me حَبيبٌdear قَريبُclose
فَكُلٌّ لَدَيَّ حَبيبٌ قَريبُ
I court his family's favor for his sake,
so each is dear and close to me.
وَأَسأَلُand I ask عَنabout غَيرِهِsomeone other than him قَبلَهُbefore him
وَأَسأَلُ عَن غَيرِهِ قَبلَهُ
لَأَقسِمَso that I may divide ظَنَّthe suspicion of الَّذيthe one who يَستَريبُis suspicious
لَأَقسِمَ ظَنَّ الَّذي يَستَريبُ
And I ask after others before him,
to divide the suspicions of anyone who suspects.
