سَرىtraveled by night الغَمامُthe cloud وَغادَتناand visited us at dawn غَواديهِits morning showers
سَرى الغَمامُ وَغادَتنا غَواديهِ
كَأَنَّهُas though it were نائِلٌa gift بِتناwe spent the night نُرَجّيهِwe hoped for it
كَأَنَّهُ نائِلٌ بِتنا نُرَجّيهِ
The cloud journeyed by night, and its morning showers visited us,
The clouds floated by and our valleys bid them adieu
as though it were a gift we had spent the night hoping for.
As if they were achievers fulfilling hopes held by you
حَكىit mirrored نَدىًbounty مِنfrom أَبيAbu (father of) العَبّاسِal-Abbas يُشبِهُهُit resembles him
حَكى نَدىً مِن أَبي العَبّاسِ يُشبِهُهُ
إِذاwhen تَهَلَّلَit beamed وَاِنتَلَّتand gushed forth عَزاليهِits waterskin mouths
إِذا تَهَلَّلَ وَاِنتَلَّت عَزاليهِ
It mirrored the bounty of Abu al-Abbas, resembling him,
They told a tale from Abul `Abbas resembling it
when it beamed and its spouts gushed forth.
When it flows and its trees stand erect in array
قَدindeed أَلبَسَhas clothed اللَهُGod عَبدَAbd (servant of) اللَهِAllah (God) أُبَّهَةًsplendor
قَد أَلبَسَ اللَهُ عَبدَ اللَهِ أُبَّهَةً
مِنthrough سَعيِthe efforts of داوُدَDawud زادَتit added فيto مَساعيهِhis achievements
مِن سَعيِ داوُدَ زادَت في مَساعيهِ
God has clothed Abd Allah in splendor
God has clothed Abdullah with a garment
through Dawud's efforts, adding to his achievements.
From seeking David, adding to his pursuits
إِنَّindeed الخَراجَthe land tax بِقِنِّسرينَin Qinnasrin يَجمَعُهُgathers it
إِنَّ الخَراجَ بِقِنِّسرينَ يَجمَعُهُ
تَدبيرُthe management of يَقظانَa vigilant man يَدريhe knows كَيفَhow يُحيِيهِhe gives it life
تَدبيرُ يَقظانَ يَدري كَيفَ يُحيِيهِ
Indeed, the land tax in Qinnasrin is gathered
Verily, the land tax by two gold coins he collects
by the management of a vigilant man who knows how to give it life.
The management of an alert one knows how to enliven it
أَعجَلَhe hastened بَعضاًsome بِضَربٍby a kind مِنof تَقَدُّمِهِhis authoritative direction
أَعجَلَ بَعضاً بِضَربٍ مِن تَقَدُّمِهِ
وَاِقتادَand he led بَعضاًsome بِضَربٍby a kind مِنof تَأَتّيهِhis tactful approach
وَاِقتادَ بَعضاً بِضَربٍ مِن تَأَتّيهِ
He hurried some along with his commanding manner,
He rushed some with a push from his advancement
and led others with his tactful approach.
And guided others with a pull from his coming
إِذاwhen تَكَلَّمَhe spoke لَمdid not يَدخُلenter صَريمَتَهُhis firm resolve
إِذا تَكَلَّمَ لَم يَدخُل صَريمَتَهُ
هَزلٌjest وَلاnor كانَwas غَيرَanything other than الجِدِّearnestness يَعنيهِconcerns him
هَزلٌ وَلا كانَ غَيرَ الجِدِّ يَعنيهِ
When he spoke, his firm resolve admitted
When he speaks no jest enters into his talk
no jest, nor did anything but earnestness concern him.
Neither is it other than serious he means thereby
لاnot يَنقُصُdiminishes الطَمَعُgreed الغاليexcessive عَزيمَتَهُhis resolve
لا يَنقُصُ الطَمَعُ الغالي عَزيمَتَهُ
وَلاand no سَبيلَway إِلىto عَيبٍa fault يُدانيهِcomes near him
وَلا سَبيلَ إِلى عَيبٍ يُدانيهِ
Excessive greed does not diminish his resolve,
Lofty ambition does not diminish his resolve
nor can any fault find a way to approach him.
Nor is there way to a fault that would blame him
عُلُوُّthe loftiness of هِمَّتِهِhis aspiration عَنabove ذاكَthat يَرفَعُهُraises him
عُلُوُّ هِمَّتِهِ عَن ذاكَ يَرفَعُهُ
وَفَضلُand the abundance of ثَروَتِهِhis wealth عَنof ذاكَthat يُغنيهِmakes him independent
وَفَضلُ ثَروَتِهِ عَن ذاكَ يُغنيهِ
His lofty aspiration raises him above that,
The height of his ambition raises him above that
and his abundant wealth frees him from needing it.
