The bewildered travelers' complaints seem like

the wailing of co-wives who spent the night jealous.

    We lend al-Qufs and al-Bardan a longing

    we begrudge Binnay and Bara.

We hope that a journey may be granted us,

as captives hope to be ransomed.

Whenever the vizier grants us leave,

the Christians' Antichrist intervenes to block it.

You see the man who shits during sex barring my way,

when I demand of him the swift pace of Mahri camels.

I have been afflicted with the lowest in rank of humans and jinn:

so alas for my ruin there, and alas for my destruction!

With one who farts more in the morning than a donkey,

and shits more in the evening than a bustard.

And how often he has smeared his friends with foul dregs,

so their sober ones spend the night drunk from it!

Abominations—if they all came together in a dog,

the dog would hide in shame or vanish from sight.

Damisa crosses himself at their hideousness,

and Tamara is ashamed at their foulness.
