سَطَواتُassaults هَجرِكِyour abandonment قَطَّعَتcut short أَنفاسيmy breaths
سَطَواتُ هَجرِكِ قَطَّعَت أَنفاسي
وَوَصَلنَand they prolonged عِندَduring تَجَلُّديmy striving for fortitude وَسواسيmy anxious thoughts
وَوَصَلنَ عِندَ تَجَلُّدي وَسواسي
The assaults of your abandonment have cut my breath short,
The tyranny of your abandonment has shattered my breath
And, as I steeled myself, prolonged my anxious thoughts.
And my worries have reached me in my pretense of composure
أَنَI مَنone who إِذاwhen سَتَرَconcealed الهَوىpassion خَوفَfor fear of العِدىfoes
أَنَ مَن إِذا سَتَرَ الهَوى خَوفَ العِدى

فَضَحَتهُ مُقلَتُهُ لَدى الجُلّاسِ
I am one who, when he hides his passion for fear of foes,
That one who, if he hides his love fearing harm
Is betrayed by his eye before his companions.
His eyes expose him to those sitting around
أَأُطيقُcan I endure? هَجرَكِyour abandonment وَهوَand it لَوif حَمَّلتُهُI imposed it
أَأُطيقُ هَجرَكِ وَهوَ لَو حَمَّلتُهُ

رُكنَ الزَمانِ لَما سَرى في الناسِ
Can I endure your abandonment, when, were I to lay it upon
Can I endure your abandonment? Even if I were to carry it
The pillar of time, it would not move among men?
To the pillar of time, it would not flow among people

Rejecting forgetfulness is itself forgetting youth;
Refusing solace is the solace from youth
And patience is abandoning patience under despair.
And patience is abandoning patience beneath despair
