    Tell the south wind, when you set out at dawn: 'Bring

    my liver a breeze from Nasim's abode.'

    Was I beguiled away from you, though you are a full moon that beguiles

    the night out of its darkness and clouds?

    Time was generous, yet I blamed it over you; you will see

    no marvel but time's generosity and my reproach.

    فَاِسمَع مَقالَةَ ظالِمٍ مَذلومِ

    And I wronged myself, striving hard to wrong it;

    so hear the words of a wrongdoer who is wronged.

    The day of misery in your absence grew worse because it

    came to me on the heels of a day of bliss.

    لا تَبعَدَن مِن ظاعِنٍ وَمُقيمِ

    So you settled in my heart, while your body journeys on;

    may you never perish, traveler and dweller alike!

    Perish my longing! Where was it when you were my

    possession, and my bond with you was beyond reproach?

    Now I hope for your love, but barring the way to it are

    the watcher's eye and Ibrahim's door.
