بِمِثلِby the like of لِقائِهاmeeting her شُفِيَwas healed الغَليلُburning longing
غَداةَon the morning تَزايَلَتparted تِلكَthose الحُمولُthe laden camels
Such a meeting with her quenched the burning longing,
With her meeting my anguish was cured
on the morning those laden camels parted.
When the next morning those sorrows were gone
بَعيدَةُhard to reach مَطلَبٍattainment وَجَمادُand barren نَيلٍfavors
فَهاso behold هِيَshe ماnot تُنالُis attained وَلاand does not تُنيلُbestow
Far beyond reach, and barren of favors,
Far from every goal, incapable of reaching the Nile
so there she is: neither attainable nor bestowing.
When she sways, her sides quiver
إِذاwhen خَطَرَتshe swayed past تَأَرَّجَexhaled fragrance جانِباهاher two sides
كَماjust as خَطَرَتglided عَلىover الرَوضِthe meadow القَبولُthe east wind
When she sways past, fragrance spreads from either side,
As a meadow sways when the wild cows roam
as the east wind glides over the meadow.
Her languor is beautiful, even deadly
وَيَحسُنُand is lovely دَلُّهاher coquettish grace وَالمَوتُand death فيهِin it
وَقَدand indeed يُستَحسَنُis admired السَيفُthe sword الصَقيلُpolished
Her coy grace is lovely, though death lies within it,
As a polished sword is rightly admired
and even a polished sword can be admired.
We stood there, our eyes busy
وَقَفناwe stood وَالعُيونُand the eyes مُشَغَّلاتٌpreoccupied
يَغالِبُcontends with دَمعَهاtheir tears نَظَرٌa gaze كَليلُweary
We stood, our eyes preoccupied,
Her tearful glance fighting off her weakness
a weary gaze contending with their tears.
Her neck inclined until the necklace
نَهَتهُrestrained it رِقبَةُfear of الواشينَthe slanderers حَتّىuntil
تَعَلَّقَhung suspended لاnot يُغيضُsubsides وَلاand does not يَسيلُflow
Fear of the slanderers held them back, until
Hung not too loose nor too tight
they hung suspended, neither ebbing nor flowing.
Her wrists adorned with bangles
غَدَتbecame قُضبانُboughs إِسحِلَةٍan isḥilah tree عَلَيهاupon them
لِفَرطِbecause of extreme الجَدلِtaut slenderness أَوشِحَةٌsashes تَجولُmove freely
They became boughs of an isḥilah tree, around which
Sway as she walks proudly
sashes turned freely, such was their taut slenderness.
Her straight posture corrected
يُقَوِّمُsets upright مِنof تَثَنّيهاtheir swaying اِعتِدالٌupright poise
يَكادُalmost يُقالُis called مِنfor هَيَفٍslenderness of waist نُحولُemaciation
Their swaying is tempered by upright poise,
By a natural poise not contrived
so slender it might almost be called emaciation.
She walked as if on cushions
مَشَينَthey walked عَلىover خَمائِلِthe meadows of ذيDhu طُلوحٍTuluh
وَقَدand already ضاقَتgrew tight بِماaround what فيهاwas within them الحُجولُthe anklets
They walked over the meadows of Dhu Tuluh,
Though the litters were full and cramped
while their anklets were tight about what they enclosed.
I say my heart grows ever sicker
أَقولُI say أَزيدَhas it been increased? مِنin سَقَمٍsickness فُؤاديmy heart
وَهَلand can? يَزدادُincrease مِنin قَتلٍkilling قَتيلُone already slain
I ask: has my heart grown sicker still?
Does one killed revive from further killing?
And can one already slain be slain still more?
No mind crazed is cured by a heart
وَلَيسَand does not يَصِحُّrecover لِلمَخبولِin the maddened man قَلبٌa heart
يُعَلُّwaters repeatedly خَبالَهُhis madness اللَحظُthe glance العَليلُlanguid
Nor can the maddened man's heart grow sound,
Excited by a fleeting glance, however dear
when a languid glance keeps watering his madness.
A new companion forgot old vows
تَناسىchose to forget عَهدَهُhis pledge سَكَنٌa beloved خَلِيٌّfree of love's cares
وَناءَand drew away بِوِدِّهِwith his affection خِلٌّa close friend مَلولُfickle
A carefree beloved chose to forget his pledge,
And the old friend is now fickle
and a fickle friend took his affection far away.
As long as the lover is true,
فَماso not دامَremained الحَبيبُthe beloved عَلىin وِصالٍunion
وَلاand not أَدّىfulfilled أَمانَتَهُhis trust خَليلُa friend
So no beloved persisted in union,
And the friend keeps his trust
nor did a friend discharge his trust.
I denounce those I once praised
أَذُمُّI censure إِلَيكَto you مَنthose whom أَحمَدتُI found praiseworthy إِنif لَمnot
يَكُنthere is عَدَدٌa number بِحَيثُwhere هُمُthey قَليلُfew
I censure before you those I once praised, even if
If they are many, still they are few
they form no multitude, being few wherever they are.
Through all times we have true friends
لَناwe have فيin كُلِّevery دَهرٍage أَصدِقاءٌfriends
تَعودُturn into عِدىًenemies وَحالاتٌand conditions تَحولُchange
In every age we have friends
Though relations change as fate does
who turn to enemies, and conditions that change.
Suspicion may pardon one hoped for
وَقَدand sometimes تَعفوfade الظُنونُexpectations بِمَنconcerning one who يُرَجّىis relied upon
فَتُخلِفُthen disappoint مِثلَlike ماتَعفُthe fading of الطُلولُthe ruins
And hopes in one relied upon may fade,
As rainclouds pardon the hills
and disappoint, as the ruins fade away.
The absent beloved is not missed
وَماand not فُقِدَwas lost الجَميلُkindness لِقُربِin the recency of عَهدٍtime
فَنَسأَلَso we might ask عَنهُabout it بَلrather نُسِيَwas forgotten الجَميلُkindness
Kindness has not been lost only recently,
Rather, the beloved is forgotten!
so that we might ask after it; rather, kindness is forgotten.
The miser's lack grieves the beggar
وَيَلؤُمُand becomes base سائِلُone who asks البُخَلاءِthe misers حِرصاًout of greed
وَإِشفاقاًand out of anxiety كَماjust as لَأُمَgrew base البَخيلُthe miser
And one who asks of misers grows base through greed,
As a miser's mother grieves his stinginess
and anxiety, just as the miser grew base.
The girls wear holiday clothes
بَناتُdaughters (she-camels) العيدِal-ʿId تَعتادُfrequent الفَيافيthe deserts
إِذاwhenever شِئناwe wish اِستَمَرَّcontinued steadily بِهاwith them الذَميلُthe easy trot
The daughters of al-ʿId frequent the deserts;
And finery stays if we wish
whenever we wish, their easy trot carries them onward.
In life, we stay or take leave
وَماand not طَرَفاthe two sides of زَمانِthe lifetime of المَرءِa person إِلّاexcept
مُقامٌa stay يَرتَضيهِhe approves of it أَوor رَحيلُdeparture
A man's life has only two sides:
Both satisfy, or departure does
a stay that pleases him, or departure.
Ala secured bounty's commencement
لَقَدindeed ضَمِنَpledged العَلاءُal-Ala بَديءَa beginning of جودٍgenerosity

Al-Ala has indeed pledged a first act of generosity,
His guarantor - the carpenter's son
Abu al-Ala's lineage stands surety for it.
The Arayhi loved gifts
يَلَذُّdelights in الأَريَحِيَّةَopenhearted generosity لِلعَطاياfor gifts
كَماjust as لَذَّتwas delightful لِشارِبِهاto its drinker الشُمولُwine
He delights in the openhearted impulse to give,
As the wine-sippers loved wine
as wine delights its drinker.
He has lasting glory, and his father's sons

شَمائِلُtraits ماdo not تَخيبُdisappoint وَماand do not تُخيلُraise false hopes
From Makhlad and his father's sons he has
Noble qualities, no pretensions
qualities that never disappoint or raise false hopes.

A people whose house of nobility is circled by the
Their grandee's name is great
lofty virtues, and whose bounty is called abundant.
If they extend lofty palms
إِذاwhen ذُكِرواthey are mentioned بِشُهرَةِwith acclaim يَومِa day of فَخرٍboasting

When they are mentioned with acclaim on a day of boasting,
Theirs surpass all outstretched hands
renown and obscurity appear alike.
Though we travel different ways
لَئِنif indeed مَدّواthey extend إِلىtoward العَلياthe highest station أَكُفّاًpalms
لَهُنَّfor them عَلىover أَكُفِّthe palms of الناسِthe people طولُgreater reach
If indeed they stretch their palms toward the heights,
And reason arranges our paths
those palms have greater reach than other people's palms.
We go where our principles guide
فَإِنَّهُمُfor indeed they وَإِنّاand indeed we حَيثُwherever نَغدوwe set forth

For they and we, wherever we go,
And desire takes us where it wills
though reason may direct us,
Abu Isa you rise high, yet you are

are made ready for what the fates decree,
Of noble soul and clan
and go wherever our roots send us.
My love for you has no excess
أَباAbu (vocative) عيسىIsa وَأَنتَand you المَرءُthe man تَعلوrise high

Abu Isa, you are a man exalted by
When right descends, as descend it will
his noble soul and his clan.
But one of noble thoughts have I seen
وَفَرتُكَI spared you لاnot هَوىًa desire بِكَin you فيfor وُفورٍundiminished abundance
إِذاwhen ماever (emphatic) حانَcame due مِنof حَقٍّa rightful claim نُزولُarrival
I spared you—not that you wished to keep your wealth intact—
Generous, though not like you
when a rightful claim came due;
When much is said and little done
وَلَكِنand yet جاهُthe standing of ذيone of خَطَرٍstature شَريفٍnoble
أَراهُI regard it وَهوَand it مِنfor جودٍgenerosity بَديلُa substitute
but the standing of a man of noble worth
Deeds, not words, tell what you will
I regard as a substitute for generosity.
إِذاif ماever (emphatic) القَولُspeech عادَreturns لَناto us بِطولٍwith bounty
فَقَبضٌthen payment received مِنfrom فَعالِكَyour deeds ماwhat تَقولُyou say
If speech brings us bounty,
then your words are payment drawn from your deeds.
