وَرُزءٌ ما عَفَت مِنهُ النُدوبُ
Spare me your reproach: the loss is recent,
My angels, it is a near covenant
A calamity whose scars have not faded.
And a misfortune from which the wounds have not healed

The delusions of wishes console me
The delusions of wishes make excuses for me
With a life after Qaysar that brings no joy.
Of a life after Caesar that does not taste good

وَماتَ الحُبُّ إِذ ماتَ الحَبيبُ
Life departed when youthful dalliance departed,
Life has turned away since the loved ones turned away
And love died when the beloved died.
And love died when the beloved died

The share I had of my world has gone,
My fortune from my life has turned away
And neither the world nor that share can be felt.
So neither life feels good, nor fortune

He lies beside others propped up at Kafr Tutha,
Lying down, leaning, in the blasphemy of Tuwa
In silence, just as drinkers fall silent.
Silently like the fading of drinking

Sleepers whom no caring friend has asked after,
Slumbering whom no guard asked about
Whose sides are never turned in their repose.
And for their lying down no sides were tossed

Their houses are shut against them at night,
Their houses are locked to them in the evening
Though once they were mighty there and held in awe.
Though they had made it prosper for a time and feared

Sighs of anguish rack my ribs
The sighs of passion break my ribs
For one cut down young, as a green bough is cut.
For one blossoming as the rod blossomed

I would elegize him, if my choice were true
Love poetry would have taken my elegy's place.
My cousin would have been in place of my elegy

And I would be the bandages rubbed on them
Like a wasted invalid left hopeless by the physician.
Like the incurable patient abandoned by the doctor

It is sorrow enough that grief dies down,
It is enough of sorrow that grief subsides
Its blazing embers and its flame fading away.
The live coal from it and the flames

That no peer can replace him, nor any equal?
A substitute nor a ransom takes his place

An eye's gesture or an unsettling look?
The eye hints at or harms him

It is the right of loved ones even if
Ribs and hearts could enclose their remains!
Their souls and hearts did their worst

God watered the peninsula not for anything
Except that that well may drink its fill.
Except to quench that heart

Deaf to the call of the road and does not
To the road's whispered conversations, nor reply.
Respond to the woes of the road or answer

Weeping women visit his neighbors,
The weeping women, his neighbors, return
Yet wailing and sobbing are withheld from him.
And the weeping and lamenting stops for him

Streaming with tears, had I been near.
Floods of tears if I were near

Can I see whom absence makes absent

When even youth departs and never returns?
When youth passes away and does not return

My pains when I remember you the sunsets
Torrents from the eye, followed by more torrents.
Followed by sunsets began to set

If the mountains lost a friend
Their solid rock would all but melt.
A frozen one among them would melt

By my life, a lifetime was unfaithful to my friendship
And my wealth is indeed our treacherous destroyer.
And woe to us, we have become outcasts

Sorrowful, depressed, and in gloom

The right has insisted on me until
That I wished my hater were the one in the right.
I wish that the one hitting the target were I

Perhaps your brother watches in case

Misfortunes from me strike him when they come

So where is the soul with abundant merit from
You stumble blindly through—and a broad, generous breast!
What it wanders in and the vast chest

Though verse holds glory and noble lineage?
When in it is honor and enough merit

So how about the excellent smooth-flowing
That range across desert wastes far and wide?
Poems that roam with wanderings

While some poetry is overtaken by weariness.
And some poetry is reached by ignoramuses

So unless good deeds are counted for
To their doer, then let sins go uncounted.
Their owner, sins are not counted
