To the spring of tears, grant grace, O nightcomets,
And gusts of longing playing in his breast.

Else turn to it one glance wherein you marvel
At what is in him—or pay no heed to marvels.
At what in it there lies or heed it not, O wondrous-face!

You turned away, though no foe's rancor had assailed love,
You barred the way and love still leads its foray on -
And departed, though no croaking raven had summoned separation.
You built and longing's track still leads the horse's tramp.

No shame that I despair, that I your estrangement shun
Distraught; and if I am overcome, your love overcomes me.
In utter woe, though love for you holds sovereign camp.

And by the crash of Ibn Yusuf's day, which resounded
When from Byzantium rumours reached between Safa and Marwah hills!
From the Byzantines to all between al-Safa and al-Akhashib:
That rallying cry for one resigned was made, though he

The raiment wore of warriors and armed multitudes.
Though that garb was the garb of a warrior.

A breast like a desert: were a passage opened through it, not even
Though destiny has made him loneliness his mate.
Sulayk of the raiding bands could traverse it alone.
He hastened on till those who saw the fray exclaimed,

He rushed forward until one who witnessed the battle asked:
"A meeting this of foes or meeting of beloved friends?"
“A meeting with enemies, or a meeting with loved ones?”

Nor were the straits with flooding rain-pools glistening,
To it, nor have the waters of the gulf dried up.

Now, by his son on the day of Ibn Amr, he indeed warded
Ibn Hubayra on the day when Ibn 'Umar came, forbid
From the faith a day with grimly frowning brows.
Religion for a day whose frown made prominent each brow,

He twisted the neck of the torrent that descended clamoring,
And snapped the torrent's neck that headlong came to open wide
To split a cavern among Lu'ayy ibn Ghalib's people.
A cave in Lu'ayy ibn Ghalib's stony height;
وَقَدand already سارَhe had marched فيagainst عَمرِوAmr بنِibn غَنمِGhanm بنِibn تَغلِبٍTaghlib

He had marched against Amr ibn Ghanm ibn Taghlib,
And O how Amr strode in Ibn Ghanam ibn Taghlib's place
As Ibn Wahb marched through the dust-cloud of Rasib.
With Ibn Wahb's stride on Rum's back planted firm

Those the first years gave I made to drink a draft
By the one sharing your byname, in the earliest years gone by.
Whose bitterness expelled the wronged man's choking sighs

And you relieved the soul of the oppressor, when it had seen
And saved him from the blades that danced like lightning in the skies.
Its death among the dancing swords.
You vaunted, "Are we not the like of you And you the like of us, no difference in the affair?"

You showed him mercy when the sword-edges swung
But for you the winds bear dearth and for us winds
Over him, with Zayd divided between slain and fugitives.
Of bounty from the north and south blow fair,

And you held the sword back from him; its blade recoiled,
Yet all the favour you Mohammed's hands denied
Blunted in its sting against him, its striking edges balking.
Was as the rain stars spill on steppe-lands dry.

O Taghlib, you are not to us what we are to you,
And who can equal him you scorn when clouds
Nor are matters between us at all comparable.
Unburden freely gifts only the rain-clouds vouchsafe?

Beneath his shade how could you fail to find
Bring you fragrance from the north wind and southern breezes.

Stars in clouded darkness, of lavish gifts and bounties!

When he gives, not even the hearts of pouring clouds.
Eyeing you eye to eye from over barrier none.

He came to you each morn inscribing his own soul
A request granted and a seeker's wish fulfilled?
While his grace every morn inscribed a thousand souls.

From those dark faces it had stripped the gloom
Your buckets in his sea were nothing strange?

Yes, and a sword whose limit none can pass
You commune with him eye to eye, with no chamberlain.
Nor antagonist defeat nor tyrannous tyrant's might.

And he visits you at dawn, acting as his own scribe,
You spurn him, yet the choice is not yours to make
While his bounty goes at dawn to a thousand scribes.
And what you wish is that these wishes failed their goal.

He surely cleared the blackness from those faces,
God's hand was over you when from your hands
And poured rain into those pallid palms.
Came what the slanderous thoughts had falsely told.

ظُلامَةُ ظَلّامٍ وَلا غَصبُ غاصِبِ
Yes, there is a sword whose edge no
So did he come, the daybreak clearing away
Tyrant's injustice or usurper's seizure can overstep.

Your anger is for it; beyond it, all is contentment,
His guidance shedding purity, his lofty thought -
And your desire is to lose these desirable blessings.
The calm of vanquished souls, the victor's settling dust.

God's hand was above your hands, which
For you he sought forgiveness when he saw
Intended against him what lay in false conjectures.
Your sins were heavier than the heavy lowering clouds,

Nor asked of you the penalties those claws exact
Of tyranny from a face of delicate contours.
That tear the honour of the honour-guarding man.

سَكينَةُ مَغلوبٍ وَأَوبَةُ غالِبِ
Piety is ushered forth from his bearing and his ascendancy by
What provocation his resentment knew belonged
The calm of one vanquished and a victor's return.
To one resentful shown, to him who counsel sought,
أَسالَhe made flow لَكُمfor you عَفواًpardon رَأَيتُمyou saw ذُنوبَكُمyour sins

He let pardon flow for you; you saw your sins
But in his pardon, did you know its consequence,
As flotsam upon it, while it filled the watercourses.
'Twould shake your souls, had he not chosen to pardon.

لِبَطشَةِ أَظفارٍ لَهُ وَمَخالِبِ
Nor did he rend from you the flank-flesh exposed
And had his cavalry but trampled you in wrath
To the assault of his nails and claws.
You would have been as powder on the crumbling hills.

وَهَيجاً لِمُهتاجٍ وَعَتباً لِعاتِبِ
And what occurred did hold anger for the angry,
I gave you counsel if for counsel there was room
And agitation for the agitated, and reproach for the reproachful.
In ears that hear not from the hearing-place exiled.

And in his pardon, if you but knew, lies a punishment
Herald of him for you, herald through him of you,
That rattles reputations, even if he does not punish.
Though for these twain no lying herald I profess.

لَطِرتُم غُباراً فَوقَ خُرسِ الكَتائِبِ
And had he trampled you with horses, the trampling of an angry man,
Ask him for war, free-handed, he permits,
You would have flown as dust above the mute battalions.
Counting that war will bring some gain, some interest.
نَصَحتُكُمُI counseled you لَوif كانَthere were لِلنُصحِfor counsel مَوضِعٌa place

I counseled you—if counsel had any place
Horseman who mounts occasion's back - then should he tire
With a listener absent from the place of understanding—
Of you, a course he'll take of changing ways untired.

He walked for you the walk of him who limps along
And in these two things I speak no liar's word.
While you from ignorance crawls like the creeping worm.

A generous giver who counts war among his gains.
His trials had sufficed. He knows what consequences hide

He advanced toward you with the stride of a mighty lion, while you
And whets its wiles through the live long night, to shear
Creep in ignorance as scorpions creep,
Like lightning-flashes or the shooting stars' descent.

We met the moon's crescent by Buṭḥah fortunate
Innate gift for scheming, experience would suffice him.
With Abu Sa'id, and time's caprice no fixed estate.

He knows what lies beyond consequences, if
We tightened firm the cords of every hope and thought
His deliberation travels—let alone what lies within consequences.

And a polisher of judgments, he spends the night laboring over them,
Who poetry's straying herd brought home together again
And sharpens them as knives are sharpened for calamities.

He scorches like thunderbolts set ablaze
Had wandered in strange themes. So we were confident
By thunder, and swoops like falling stars.
Its rhymes were pathways to the highest goals.

We found the crescent of the flatlands auspicious, with Abu
Sa'id, and time's vicissitudes caused no unease.

To the most generous companion and the bravest friend.

He restored poetry's unity, while poetry was the most wayward of
Wayward things, rejected, the strangest of strange things.

So he gathered its far-flung reaches to himself, certain
That its rhymes are threads for noble deeds.
