through al-Mutawakkil, the upholder and appointer of successors,
By the riser, the successor, the reliant

Until you slay at the Gulf with clashing swords

And became defiant in your glory's shade, so it grew
in the finest station and the most secure stronghold.
In the best station and most fortified refuge

If I were to envy a people or vie with them,
If I were jealous or competed with a group
I would envy or vie with the people of Mosul.
I would've envied or competed with Mosul's people

Spring camped in their abodes and you shaded it
and both of you bear a smiling flash of lightning.
You both of glittering lightning flickering

So it illuminated from it each darkened valley
shrouded in gloom, and every barren valley grew fertile.
Obscure, and made fertile every flooded valley

My country with growth from your pouring forth?

A journey you went on, eyes delighted by it,
and eased the anguish of every heart locked shut.
And relieved tightness of each latched heart

whose landmarks are new, and leave a dwelling behind.
Its landmarks renewed, leaving a stage

And when you want, you make a day of stopping
on which joy lingers, and a day for departure.
Where gladness halts, and a day of departing
