أَبا حَسَنٍ أَنتَ وَشكُ الأَجَل

أَبا حَسَنٍ أَنتَ وَشكُ الأَجَل

وَثُكلُ الغِنى وَاِنتِقالُ الدُوَل

وَثُكلُ الغِنى وَاِنتِقالُ الدُوَل

O Abu Hasan, you are death at hand,

Abu Hasan, you are the approach of death

and the loss of wealth and the passing of dynasties.

And loss of wealth and transfer of fortunes

زَعَمتَ بِأَنَّكَ لَستَ الدَمارَ

زَعَمتَ بِأَنَّكَ لَستَ الدَمارَ

وَلَستَ العِثارَ وَلَستَ الزَلَل

وَلَستَ العِثارَ وَلَستَ الزَلَل

You claimed that you are not destruction,

You claimed you were neither ruin

nor a stumble, nor a misstep.

Nor stumbling, nor slipping

فَبَيِّن لَنا مَن لَوى شُؤمُهُ

فَبَيِّن لَنا مَن لَوى شُؤمُهُ

أَبا جَعفَرٍ عَن بَريدِ الجَبَل

أَبا جَعفَرٍ عَن بَريدِ الجَبَل

So tell us whose ill omen turned

So explain to us who brought his ill omens

Abu Jaʿfar away from al-Jabal's postal service?

Upon Abu Ja'far from the mountain road

وَتُظهِرُ في آلِ وَهبٍ هَوىً

وَتُظهِرُ في آلِ وَهبٍ هَوىً

وَأَنتَ نَحَستَهُمُ يا زُحَل

وَأَنتَ نَحَستَهُمُ يا زُحَل

And you display affection for the house of Wahb,

And showed desire in the family of Wahb

yet you brought them ill fortune, O Saturn.

While you are their bad luck, O Saturn

نَقَضتَهُمُ عُروَةً عُروَةً

نَقَضتَهُمُ عُروَةً عُروَةً

وَفَرَّقتَ عَنهُم جَميعَ العَمَل

وَفَرَّقتَ عَنهُم جَميعَ العَمَل

You undid them, bond by bond,

You have undone them one by one

and stripped them of every office.

And separated from them all work
