لاno شَكَّdoubt أَنّيthat I ثاكِلٌbereft of عُمريmy life
وَمُبَوَّأٌand lodged عَنafter عاجِلٍa short while قَبريmy grave
No doubt I am bereft of my life,
No doubt I’m forsaken, my life put to waste,
And shall soon be lodged in my grave.
And banished from sight of my final resting place.
هَجَرَforsook الحَبيبُthe beloved فَمِتُّso I died مِنfrom شَعَفٍconsuming passion
لَمّاwhen حُرِمتُI was deprived of عَزيمَةَthe resolve for الصَبرِpatience
The beloved forsook me, so I died of consuming passion,
My love left me; I died of yearning's ache—
When I was deprived of the resolve to endure.
When patience failed me, its pact I did break.
فَإِذاso when قَضَيتُI die فَنادِthen cry out ياO حَزَناsorrow!
هَذاthis قَتيلُone slain by الصَدِّrejection وَالهَجرِand abandonment
So when I die, cry out: “O sorrow!
When I am gone, cry aloud, O my sadness:
This is one slain by rejection and abandonment.”
"Here lies a victim of firmness and gladness!"
وَالبَدرُand the full moon فيin حِلٍّabsolution وَفيand in سَعَةٍfreedom
مِنfor سَفكِهِhis shedding دَمَthe blood of عَبدِهِhis slave الحُرِّfreeborn
And the full moon is blameless and at liberty
The moon's full or slender, in freedom or chains—
To shed the blood of his freeborn slave.
It cares not for spilling the blood of its slain.
