Nasr has grown distant from one who hopes,

who awaits help and its coming.

    Perhaps Hamula has slain

my servant openly, or murdered him by stealth.

No one feared he would commit a killing,

    an unlawful one, to keep his wealth safe for him;

nor that, plunging into shameful deeds,

he would put his petitioners to the sword.

Yes, in the changing of this age

is what has changed a man's companions.

And Rabi'a has turned away from a poet

who calls Rabi'a his maternal uncles.

So may poetry, as a craft, be unblessed,

nor those about whom it is spoken, nor those who speak it.

And I used to think Asim a protector

from the calamity whose intractability I dread.

Nor did I find al-Marzubani praiseworthy,

though I used to praise his deeds.

    بَلِ النُجحُ لُقّيتُ إِخلالَهُ

    Yet they did not fall short in generosity;

rather, it was success that I found wanting.

It is fortune: its measure dwindles

for whoever weighs fortune or measures it out.

    بِ تُنَقِّلُ أَحوالُها حالَهُ

    And a man is indeed subject to calamities;

their changing states alter his own.

And what is made ready against

him is kin to what you prepare for.

I see good and evil spring from one mine,

and much striving and little of it likewise.

So send my servant back, even if he has not gained

success, nor been granted his hopes,

    to masters of Banu Makhlad,

whom Generosity counts as its family.
