أَأُخَيَّO my dear brother نَهنِهrestrain دَمعَكَyour tears المَسفوكاshed
إِنَّindeed الحَوادِثَcalamities يَنصَرِمنَwill pass away وَشيكاsoon
My dear brother, restrain your streaming tears.
Calamities will soon pass away.

Never do they bring to your mind a sorrow of sheer anguish
without following it with a joy that makes you forget.
الدَهرُtime أَنصَفُfairer مِنكَthan you فيin أَحكامِهِits judgments
إِذsince كانَit was يَأخُذُtaking بَعضَpart of ماwhat يُعطيكاit gives you
Time is fairer than you in its judgments,
for it takes only part of what it gives you.
وَقَليلُand a little of هَذاthis السَعيِstriving يُكسِبُكَearns you الغِنىwealth

A little of this striving earns you wealth,
if what suffices you can make you rich.
نَلقىwe meet المَنونَdeath حَقائِقاًas certainties وَكَأَنَّناyet as though we

مِنout of غِرَّةٍheedlessness نَلقىwe find بِهِنَّin them شُكوكاdoubts
We face the certainties of death, yet seem
in our heedlessness to find doubts in them.

Do not rely on life's vicissitudes, for they are
flashes that sometimes gladden you and sometimes grieve you.

his endeavors reached the stars in height,

for seventy years, fully completed.

Fate unleashed upon him a calamity's sudden onslaught,
whose first whispered report was no falsehood.
فَكَأَنَّماso it was as though خَضَدَsnapped الحِمامُdeath بِيومِهِon his day

It was as though death, on his day, snapped
a mighty bough in the winds' open path.

Convey this to Ubayd Allah, towering over Madhhij
in nobility, and granted its preeminence outright:
ماnot حَقُّbefitting قَدرِكَyour worth أَنthat أُحَمِّلَI should entrust مُرسَلاًa messenger
غَيريother than myself إِلَيكَto you وَلَوeven if بَعُدتُI am far away أَلوكاa message
It ill befits your worth that I should entrust a messenger
other than myself with a message to you, however far away I am.
كُلُّall المَصائِبِcalamities ماas long as بَقيتَyou remain alive نَعُدُّهُwe reckon it
حَرَضاًa trifle يَزِلُّslipping away عَنِfrom النُفوسِsouls رَكيكاfeeble
All calamities, as long as you live, we reckon
feeble trifles that slip away from our souls.
أَنتَyou الَّذيare the one who لَوif قيلَit were said لِلجودِto generosity اتَّخِذtake
خِلّاًan intimate friend أَخارَit would turn إِلَيكَto you لاnot يَعدوكاpass you by
You are the one—if Generosity were told, 'Take
a friend,' it would turn to you and seek no other.
وَكَأَنَّماand as though آلَيتَyou swore an oath وَالمَعروفُand goodness لاnot
تَألوهُyou neglect it مُصطَفِياًchoosing it وَلاnor يَألوكاdoes it neglect you
And it is as though you and goodness have sworn: you never
fail to choose it, nor does it fail you.
إِنَّindeed الرَزِيَّةَthe tragedy فيis in الفَقيدِthe lost one فَإِنbut if هَفاunsettles
جَزَعٌanguish بِصَبرِكَyour patience فَالرَزِيَّةُthen the tragedy فيكاis in you
The tragedy lies in the one lost; but if
grief makes your patience falter, then the tragedy lies in you.
وَمَتىand when وَجَدتَhave you found الناسَpeople إِلّاexcept تارِكاًone leaving
لِحَميمِهِhis loved one فيin التُربِthe dust أَوor مَتروكاone left behind
And when have you found people other than those who leave
a loved one in the earth, or are themselves left there?
بَلَغَhe attained الإِرادَةَhis wish أَنin that فَداكَhe ransomed you بِنَفسِهِwith his own life
وَوَدِدتَand you wished لَوthat تَفديهِyou might ransom him لاnot يَفديكاhe ransom you
He attained his wish in ransoming you with his own life,
while you wished to ransom him, rather than have him ransom you.
لَوif يَنجَليwere revealed لَكَto you ذُخرُهاits stored treasure مِنof نَكبَةٍa calamity
جَلَلٍgrievous لَأَضحَكَكَwould make you laugh الَّذيthat which يُبكيكاmakes you weep
If this calamity's stored treasure were revealed to you,
grievous as it is, what makes you weep would make you laugh.
وَلَحالَand would intervene كُلَّall الحَولِintervention مِنin دونِthe way of الَّذيthat which

And, wholly blocking the way to what
now angers you, would stand what pleases you.
ماnot يَومُthe day أُمِّكَof your mother وَهوَthough it was أَروَعُthe most dreadful نازِلٍcalamity

The day you lost your mother, though the most dreadful blow
to strike you, was less grievous than the day you lost your father.

A wound reopened in [your heart?], and a glimpse
of what you have known calamities to show you.

And time's bereavement is a lot shared equally
by all humankind, commoners and kings:
عِبءٌa burden تَوَزَّعَهُhave shared it الأَنامُall people يُخِفُّهُmakes it lighter
أَلّاthat ... not تَزالَyou cease تُصيبُto find فيهِin it شَريكاa fellow sharer
a burden shared among all people, made lighter
because you always find another to share it.
