نَفسيmy soul تَقيكَshields you وَوالِدايَand my parents كِلاهُماboth of them
وَجَميعُand all مَنwhom وَلَداthe two begot مِنَfrom الأَسواءِmisfortunes
May my soul shield you, and both my parents,
My soul implores you and both my parents,
And all whom they begot, from misfortunes.
And all those who were born under misfortune,
ثِقَلُthe burden الخَراجِthe land tax عَلَيَّupon me دَينٌa debt مُؤلِمٌpainful
وَلَدَيكَand with you مِمّاfor what أَشتَكيهِI complain of it دَوائيmy cure
The burden of the land tax is a painful debt upon me;
The burden of taxes weighs heavy on me, it is a painful debt,
And with you lies the cure for what I suffer.
And you have the remedy for my complaints,
أَنتَyou الطَبيبُthe physician لِداءِfor the ailment of جُرحيmy wound وَالَّذيand the one who
بِدَوائِهِwith his remedy لاno شَكَّdoubt أَدفَعُI repel دائيmy illness
You are the physician for my wound's affliction, and the one
You are the doctor for the wounds of my affliction,
With whose remedy I drive away my illness, without a doubt.
With your medicine, no doubt, I will overcome my illness,
وَالوَعدُand the promise فيهِconcerning it مِنكَfrom you ليto me مُتَقَدِّمٌpreviously made
فَاِمنُنso grant a favor عَلَيَّupon me بِأَنby تُخِفَّyou lighten أَدائيmy payment
And you have already given me your promise concerning it;
Your promise to me is longstanding,
So grant me the favor of lightening my payment.
So do me a favor by lightening my burdens,
إِنَّindeed البَقِيَّةَthe remainder مِنof خَراجيmy land tax قَدرُهاits value
ماnot إِنreinforces the negation يَكونُis لَدَيكَto you قَدرَthe value of غَداءِa lunch
Indeed, the value of what remains of my land tax
Indeed what remains of my taxes, its measure,
Is not, to you, even the cost of a lunch.
If it were with you, would be but a day’s meal,
فَاِمنُنso grant a favor عَلَيَّupon me بِصَومِby fasting يَومٍa day واحِدٍsingle
وَاِجعَلand make غَداءَكَyour lunch ليfor me فَفيهِfor in it غَنائيmy sufficiency
So favor me by fasting for a single day,
So do me a favor with the fast of a single day,
And give me your lunch, for in it lies all I need.
And make your meal for me, for in it is my contentment.
