وَآلُand the house of حُمَيدٍḤumayd عِندَdown to آخِرَهُمthe last of them عِنديwith me
May good be yours—what can I offer with ease, and what with all my effort,
To you all goodness in proportion to my spontaneity and effort
when the house of Ḥumayd, to its last member, is with me?
And the family of Humaid is for me until their last one
تَتابَعَتِfollowed in succession الطاءانِthe two letters ṭāʾ طوسٌṬūs وَطَيِّئٌand Ṭayyiʾ
فَقُلso speak فيof خُراسانٍKhurāsān وَإِنand if شِئتَyou wish فيof نَجدِNajd
The two ṭāʾs followed in succession: Ṭūs and Ṭayyiʾ;
Tayyi and Taws succeeded one another
so speak of Khurāsān, and, if you wish, of Najd.
So say in Khurasan, and if you wish, in Najd
أَتونيthey came to me بِلاwithout وَعدٍan appointment وَإِنand if لَمdid not تَجِدyou find لَهُمfor them

They came to me without an appointment; and if you could not find for them
They came to me without a promise, and if you do not find for them
their wine, they all departed together by appointment.
A promise, they all departed with their winds
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see خِلّاًan intimate friend كَالنَبيذِlike wine إِذاwhen جَفاit turns away

And I have never seen a friend like wine: when it turns away,
And I have not seen vinegar like wine when it turns sour
its companions and loving friends shun you on its account.
Its makers and lovers turned away from it

And among the young men’s misfortunes was that they went out in the morning
And from what made the youths happy that they
at Shaʿbān’s end, at the first bloom of roses.
At the end of Sha'ban went to see the first roses
غَداtomorrow يَحرُمُbecomes forbidden الماءُwater القَراحُpure وَتَنتَويand depart

Tomorrow pure water becomes forbidden, and away go
They went in the morning when water becomes unlawful and faces
forms of pleasure whose loss brings sorrow.
Appearing from pleasures are saddened by loss

Help us through a day when we escort our revelry
Help us on a day we bid farewell to our amusements
to a night when its fatal hour comes.
To a night in which it has a binding fate
فَلَستُfor I am not أَعُدُّI count كَمhow many يَدٍa favor لَكَof yours سَمَّحَتmade generous

For I cannot count how many favors of yours have made
So I do not count how many hands you extended to me
my hands generous, or how much glory from you has built up my glory.
My hands and glory you have built for me my glory
وَماand not النِعمَةُthe blessing البَيضاءُradiant فيin شِركَةِsharing الغِنىwealth
بَلِrather النِعمَةُthe blessing البَيضاءُradiant فيin شِركَةِsharing الحَمدِpraise
And the radiant blessing lies not in sharing wealth;
And pure blessing is not in partnership with wealth
rather, the radiant blessing lies in sharing praise.
But pure blessing is in partnership with gratitude
