كَفانيmay He spare me اللَهُGod شَرَّكَyour harm ياO صَدودُaloof one
وَأُشمِتَand may be made to gloat ليfor me بِكَover you الوَصلُunion الجَديدُnew
May God spare me your harm, O aloof one,
And may renewed union be made to gloat over you for me.
لَعَلَّperhaps سُرورَjoy أَيّامٍdays تَوَلَّتthat passed
بِبَهجَتِهاwith their splendor يَعودُwill return كَماas نُريدُwe wish
Perhaps the joy of days gone by
Will return with their splendor, as we wish.
فَيُقبِلُthen will approach مُدبِرٌone who turned away وَلّىdeparted حَميداًpraised
وَيَنقَطِعُand will cease الصُدودُestrangement فَلاand so not يَعودُreturn
Then what turned away, praised as it departed, will draw near,
And estrangement will cease, never to return.
أُؤَمِّلُهاI hope for them وَأَفرَقُهاand I fear them جَميعاًboth at once
وَأَقرَبُand the nearest ماwhat أُؤَمِّلُهُI hope for it بَعيدُfar away
I both hope for those days and fear them,
Yet the nearest thing I hope for is far away.
