لَتَهنِئ أَميرَ المُؤمِنينَ عَطِيَّةٌ

لَتَهنِئ أَميرَ المُؤمِنينَ عَطِيَّةٌ

مِنَ اللَهِ يَزكو نَيلُها وَيَطيبُ

مِنَ اللَهِ يَزكو نَيلُها وَيَطيبُ

May a gift gladden the Commander of the Faithful,

A gift from God will delight the Commander of the Faithful

from God, blessed and sweet to receive.

Its attainment purified, its essence made good

يَدُ اللَهِ في فَتحٍ إِلَيكَ جَميلَةٌ

يَدُ اللَهِ في فَتحٍ إِلَيكَ جَميلَةٌ

وَإِنعامُهُ فيهِ عَلَيكَ عَجيبُ

وَإِنعامُهُ فيهِ عَلَيكَ عَجيبُ

God's hand has been gracious to you concerning Fath,

The hand of God was beautiful in granting you victory

and His favor toward you in his case is wondrous.

And His blessing therein for you is wondrous

وَلِيُّكَ دونَ الأَولِياءِ مَحَبَّةً

وَلِيُّكَ دونَ الأَولِياءِ مَحَبَّةً

وَمَولاكَ وَالمَولى الصَريحُ نَسيبُ

وَمَولاكَ وَالمَولى الصَريحُ نَسيبُ

Your friend, set apart from other friends by love,

Your patron, unlike any other patron, is beloved

and your retainer—a true retainer is kin.

And your Master - the Manifest Master - is a close kinsman

وَعَبدُكَ أَحظَتهُ إِلَيكَ نَصيحَةٌ

وَعَبدُكَ أَحظَتهُ إِلَيكَ نَصيحَةٌ

وَأَرضاكَ مِنهُ مَشهَدٌ وَمَغيبُ

وَأَرضاكَ مِنهُ مَشهَدٌ وَمَغيبُ

And your servant, whom sincere devotion endeared to you,

And your servant, his devotion to you has granted him

and whose presence and absence alike have pleased you.

Sincerity towards you, whether seen or unseen

رَمَتهُ صُروفُ النائِباتِ فَأَخطَأَت

رَمَتهُ صُروفُ النائِباتِ فَأَخطَأَت

كَذا الدَهرُ يُخطي مَرَّةً وَيُصيبُ

كَذا الدَهرُ يُخطي مَرَّةً وَيُصيبُ

The vicissitudes of calamity shot at him, but missed;

The turns of fate assailed him, so he missed the mark

such is Time: sometimes it misses, sometimes it hits.

Thus does time err once and hit the mark another time

وَلَم أَنسَهُ يَطفو وَيَرسُبُ تارَةً

وَلَم أَنسَهُ يَطفو وَيَرسُبُ تارَةً

وَيَظهَرُ لِلرائينَ ثُمَّ يَغيبُ

وَيَظهَرُ لِلرائينَ ثُمَّ يَغيبُ

Nor have I forgotten him, floating and sinking by turns,

Nor did I forget him floating and sinking at times

and appearing to onlookers, then vanishing.

And appearing to onlookers, then disappearing

دَعا بِاِسمِكَ المَنصورِ وَالمَوجُ غامِرٌ

دَعا بِاِسمِكَ المَنصورِ وَالمَوجُ غامِرٌ

لِدَعوَتِهِ وَالمَوتُ مِنهُ قَريبُ

لِدَعوَتِهِ وَالمَوتُ مِنهُ قَريبُ

He called upon your victorious name, while the waves drowned

He called upon your name, O Mansur, while the waves raged

his cry, and death was close to him.

His call overcame them, and death was near

وَأُقسِمُ لَو يَدعوكَ وَالخَيلُ حَولَهُ

وَأُقسِمُ لَو يَدعوكَ وَالخَيلُ حَولَهُ

لَفَرَّجَها عَنهُ أَغَرُّ نَجيبُ

لَفَرَّجَها عَنهُ أَغَرُّ نَجيبُ

And I swear, had he called upon you, with cavalry around him,

I swear, if he called you while the horses were around him

a radiant, noble one would surely have driven them away from him.

The noblest stallion would make way for him

فَلَولا دِفاعُ اللَهِ دامَت عَلى البُكا

فَلَولا دِفاعُ اللَهِ دامَت عَلى البُكا

عُيونٌ وَلَجَّت في الغَرامِ قُلوبُ

عُيونٌ وَلَجَّت في الغَرامِ قُلوبُ

But for God's protection, weeping would have continued

Were it not for God's defense, eyes would still weep

in eyes, and hearts would have persisted in anguish.

And hearts would remain sunk in sorrow

فَجاءَ عَلى يَأسٍ وَقَد كادَتِ القُوى

فَجاءَ عَلى يَأسٍ وَقَد كادَتِ القُوى

تَقَطَّعُ وَالآمالُ فيهِ تَخيبُ

تَقَطَّعُ وَالآمالُ فيهِ تَخيبُ

Then he came amid despair, when strength had almost

He came in desperation, when strength was almost spent

given out, and hopes for him were failing.

And hopes in him were near disappointment

فَيا فَرحَةً جاءَت عَلى إِثرِ تَرحَةٍ

فَيا فَرحَةً جاءَت عَلى إِثرِ تَرحَةٍ

وَبُشرى أَتَت بَعدَ النَعِيِّ تَؤوبُ

وَبُشرى أَتَت بَعدَ النَعِيِّ تَؤوبُ

Oh, what joy came on the heels of sorrow,

So welcome a joy that followed a sadness

and glad tidings came back after the death announcement!

And good news that came after mourning's call

ثَنَت مِن تَباريحِ الغَليلِ وَنَهنَهَت

ثَنَت مِن تَباريحِ الغَليلِ وَنَهنَهَت

مَدامِعَ ما تَرقا لَهُنَّ غُروبُ

مَدامِعَ ما تَرقا لَهُنَّ غُروبُ

It eased the torments of burning grief and checked

It stilled the agitation of distress and comforted

tearful eyes whose torrents would not cease.

Tears that had flowed with no sunset

بَقيتَ أَميرَ المُؤمِنينَ فَإِنَّما

بَقيتَ أَميرَ المُؤمِنينَ فَإِنَّما

بَقاؤُكَ حُسنٌ لِلزَمانِ وَطيبُ

بَقاؤُكَ حُسنٌ لِلزَمانِ وَطيبُ

May you live on, Commander of the Faithful, for

You remained, O Commander of the Faithful, and your

your continued life is sheer beauty and sweetness to Time.

Continued existence is goodness for the age and purity
