Let my tears, amid that longing,

whisper together of what the day of parting wrought.

So perhaps tears, by pouring forth, may soothe

the burning thirst of one distraught with longing.

Indeed, Rayya has given no thirst-quenching draught of union,

nor has she known the anguish of lovers.

She sent her phantom to me, though between us lay

two months' swift travel for noble Mahri camels.

It visited late at night from al-Sham, and greeted

a man crazed with love, enamored in Upper Iraq.

It did what it did, then returned to her,

while darkness wore its threadbare robes.

We have taken a sliver of reunion,

and meeting in sleep is as good as making up the loss.

O Abu Nahshal, may there ever be one to water

you with rain, whatever your condition.

If you could see my anguish, my sorrow, and my passion,

my burning thirst, my heartache, and my longing,

and my turning toward you from Mount al-Qatul,

while tears stream forth in torrents,

you would know for certain that I am true in affection,

faithful to the pledge and covenant.

May my life and family ransom the beauty of that

    generous courtesy and character,

and Samiti bounty, and the radiant king

at the far end of the portico.

Ever alone in deliberation, in seclusion,

he takes no shield against the nights.

Calamities shrink away if they confront him,

when he is absorbed in thought, with bowed head.

A Samiti goes forth, and in his right hand moves

the course of lifespans and livelihoods,

with threat and promise, like the pouring

of rain amid thunder and lightning.

And lofty merits brought into union

by gathered wealth he consigned to dispersal,

and gifts that come in companies, then go forth

as companions to petitioners, company after company.

He comes and goes with a raincloud of bounty,

that spreads its shade over the horizons,

and with a resolve that, if it repelled the dawn,

no face of the east would emerge in radiance,

and with a majesty that, if it belonged to the full moon,

the decree of darkening would never apply to it.

    Bounty springs from lavish gifts

from him, and valor from blood poured out.
