أَمِن بَعدِ وَجدِ الفَتحِ بي وَغَرامِهِ

أَمِن بَعدِ وَجدِ الفَتحِ بي وَغَرامِهِ

وَمَنزِلَتي مِن جَعفَرٍ وَمَكاني

وَمَنزِلَتي مِن جَعفَرٍ وَمَكاني

Is it after al-Fath’s love for me and his devotion,

and my standing with Ja‘far and my position,

أُكَلَّفُ مَدحَ الأَرمَنِيِّ عَلى الَّذي

أُكَلَّفُ مَدحَ الأَرمَنِيِّ عَلى الَّذي

لَدَيهِ مِنَ البَغضاءِ وَالشَنَآنِ

لَدَيهِ مِنَ البَغضاءِ وَالشَنَآنِ

that I am charged with praising the Armenian, despite what

he harbors of hatred and enmity,

وَمِن خُلُقٍ يَستَنكِفُ الكَلبُ أَن يُرى

وَمِن خُلُقٍ يَستَنكِفُ الكَلبُ أَن يُرى

لَهُ جارَ بَيتٍ أَو رَضيعَ لِبانِ

لَهُ جارَ بَيتٍ أَو رَضيعَ لِبانِ

and a character such that a dog would scorn to be seen

as his next-door neighbor or foster-brother?

نَديمَيَّ لا زالَ السَحابُ مُوَكَّلاً

نَديمَيَّ لا زالَ السَحابُ مُوَكَّلاً

بِجودِكُما بِالسِحِّ وَالهَطَلانِ

بِجودِكُما بِالسِحِّ وَالهَطَلانِ

My two boon companions, may the clouds forever be entrusted

with your bounty, in downpours and streaming rain.

فَلَو كانَ صَرفُ الدَهرِ حُرّاً عَداكُما

فَلَو كانَ صَرفُ الدَهرِ حُرّاً عَداكُما

إِلَيَّ وَما ناصاكُما وَعَداني

إِلَيَّ وَما ناصاكُما وَعَداني

For had the reversals of fate been noble, they would have passed you both by

to reach me, not grappled with you and passed me over.
