بِسُرَّin Surra ('was delighted,' in the place-name) مَنman ('whoever,' in the place-name) راRa ('saw,' in the place-name) لَناwe have إِمامٌan imam
تَغرِفُdraw مِنfrom بَحرِهِhis sea البِحارُthe seas
In Surra man Ra, we have an imam,
With joy for one who is for us a leader
The seas draw from his sea.
The seas draw from his sea,
خَليفَةٌa caliph يُرتَجىis looked to with hope وَيُخشىand is feared
كَأَنَّهُas though he were جَنَّةٌa paradise وَنارُand fire
A caliph in whom hope is placed, and who is feared,
A caliph to be hoped for and feared,
As though he were paradise and fire.
As though he were paradise and hellfire.
كِلتاboth يَدَيهِhis hands تَفيضُpour forth سَحّاًin torrents
كَأَنَّهاas though it were ضَرَّةٌa co-wife تَغارُis jealous
Both his hands pour forth in torrents,
Both his hands overflow with bounty
As though each were a jealous co-wife.
As if competing in generosity.
فَلَيسَso it does not تَأتيdo اليَمينُthe right hand شَيئاًanything
إِلّاexcept that أَتَتdid مِثلَهاthe same as it اليَسارُthe left hand
For the right hand does nothing
So the right hand brings nothing
Without the left doing the same.
Unless the left brings the like of it.
فَالمُلكُso kingship فيهِin him وَفيand in بَنيهِhis sons
ماas long as بَقِيَremains اللَيلُthe night وَالنَهارُand the day
So kingship rests in him and in his sons,
Thus sovereignty in him and his sons
As long as night and day endure.
Lasts as long as night and day endure.
