لَوif only تَرانيyou could see me وَالنَدامىand the drinking companions
مِنamong مُحِمٍّone offering good wishes وَمُفَدِand one offering himself as ransom
If only you could see me with my drinking companions,
Some offering good wishes, others pledging themselves as ransom.
أَطنَبواthey spoke at length فيماabout what تَمَنَّواthey wished for
فَتَمَنَّيتُكَso I wished for you عِنديwith me
They spoke at length of what they wished for,
So I wished for you beside me.
لَيتَwould that شِعريmy knowledge عَنكَabout you ماwhat قَدalready
كانhad become مِنof أَمرِكَyour affairs بَعديafter me
Would that I knew, concerning you, what
Had become of you after I left.
أَرَعَيتَhave you honored? العَهدَthe pledge مِنّيfrom me
مِثلَماjust as أَرعاكَI keep for you عَهديmy pledge

Have you kept faith with me,
As I keep my pledge to you?
