We yearn for Iraq's sweetness and beauty,

Yet its summer blaze and searing heat keep us away.

It is the land we love when its season turns pleasant,

And we flee it when its noonday heat blazes.

Our first beloved and our intimate companion, who

Is loved, even though Damascus now makes her jealous.

Long have I busied myself with the earth's east and west,

Roaming through its horizons and journeying across it.

So I have seen no dwelling-place like Syria,

For wine you take each morning and a cup you pass around.

A place of health for bodies and a delight for eyes,

And an oppressive diversion for souls, and their joy.

Sacred is she; spring has lavishly watered her lands,

So in every home there is a garden and its pool.

Her two regions rejoiced, and her beauty was doubled,

Because the Commander of the Faithful is visiting her.

You set out for her, accompanied, with a resolve

Whose beginning and end proceeded aright,

And in a year whose auspicious stars have risen upon you,

And Nowruz greeted you as its bearer of glad tidings.

So join it to successive years, and may they ever remain

    Sacred—their days and their months.

And live forever for noble deeds and glory,

For you are the radiance of noble deeds and their light.
