أَعوذُI seek refuge بِبَدرٍwith Badr مِنfrom فِراقِparting حَبيبيmy beloved
وَمِنand from لَوعَتيmy burning anguish فيin إِثرِهِhis wake وَنَحيبيand my sobbing
I seek refuge with Badr from parting with my beloved,
I seek refuge in the full moon from parting with my beloved,
And from my burning anguish in his wake, and my sobbing,
And from my anguish after him and my weeping,
وَمِنand from فَجعَتيmy grief over loss مِنهُbecause of him بِقُرَّةِover a delight to أَعيُنٍeyes
إِذاwhen شُرِعَتthey are trained فيهِupon him وَشُغلِand the preoccupation of قُلوبِhearts
And from my grief at losing him, a delight to eyes
And from my sorrow over him, the delight of my eyes,
When they are trained upon him, and the preoccupation of hearts.
When it is set upon him and occupies my heart,
يَروحُhe goes قَريبَnear الدارِthe dwelling وَالهَجرِand estrangement دونَهُbetween us and him
وَرُبَّand many a قَريبِone near الدارِthe dwelling غَيرُnot قَريبِnear
He goes his way, his home nearby, yet estrangement stands between us;
He who is near in abode goes far in estrangement,
And many a man whose home is near is not truly near.
And many a near neighbor is not a near kinsman,
وَمِثلُand one like أَبيAbu (father of) النَجمِal-Najm (the star) المُهَذَّبِrefined فِعلُهُhis conduct
رَثىfelt pity لِمَشوقٍfor one who yearns أَوor أَوىfelt compassion لِغَريبِfor a stranger
And one like Abu al-Najm, refined in his conduct,
And his action is like that of my father an-Nujm the refined,
Has pitied one who yearns, or shown compassion to a stranger.
Who grieved for a longing one or gave lodging to a stranger.
