أَرىI see العَرَبَthe Arabs التاثَتhave gone awry عَوائِدُcustomary ways فَضلِهاtheir generosity
أَرى العَرَبَ التاثَت عَوائِدُ فَضلِها
فَمُستَبطَأٌso, slow to respond فيin حاجَتيmy need وَلَئيمُand miserly
فَمُستَبطَأٌ في حاجَتي وَلَئيمُ
I see the Arabs’ generous ways have gone awry:
I see the Arabs have lost the virtues they were known for
So one is slow to meet my need, and another miserly.
I am left waiting desperately for what I need, feeling wretched,
فَماfor ... not نَصَرَتنيhelped me الأَزدُthe Azd tribe مَرجُوَّhoped-for نَصرِهاits help
فَما نَصَرَتني الأَزدُ مَرجُوَّ نَصرِها
وَلاnor رَجَعَتrestored حَقّيmy due إِلَيَّto me تَميمُTamim
وَلا رَجَعَت حَقّي إِلَيَّ تَميمُ
For the Azd did not give me the help I had hoped for,
Azd, from whom I hoped for aid, gave me no support,
Nor did Tamim restore my due to me.
Nor did Tamim restore to me what was rightfully mine.
