قَدindeed خِفتُI have feared أَلّاthat … not أَراكُمI see you آخِرَto the end of الأَبَدِeternity
وَأَنand that أَموتَI die بِهَذاof this الشَوقِlonging وَالكَمَدِand grief
I have feared I shall not see you for the rest of time,
I fear I'll never see you again till the end of time
And that I shall die of this longing and grief.
And that I'll die of this yearning and ennui
المَوتُdeath ياO مالِكيmy master خَيرٌbetter وَأَروَحُand more restful ليfor me
مِنthan أَنthat أَعيشَI live حَليفَa companion of الهَمِّworry وَالسُهُدِand sleeplessness
Death, O my master, is better and more restful for me
Death, my dear ones, is better for me
Than living as a companion to worry and sleeplessness.
Than to live shackled by worries and melancholy
ياO عَلوَʿAlw ياO زينَةَornament of الدُنياthe world وَبَهجَتِهاand its delight
أَنضَجتِyou have cooked قَلبيmy heart وَأَلبَستِand you have clothed الهَوىpassion كَبِديmy liver
O ʿAlw, O ornament of the world and its delight,
O sublime beauty, joy of this life
You have cooked my heart and clothed my liver in passion.
You've ripened my heart and clad my love in armor
ماwhat ضَرَّharmed قَوماًa people إِذاif أَوطَأتِyou set foot upon أَرضَهُمُtheir land
أَلّاthat … not يَرَواthey see ضَوءَthe light of شَمسٍa sun آخِرَto the end of الأَبَدِeternity
What harm would it do a people, if you set foot upon their land,
No people were ever harmed
Never to see sunlight till the end of time?
By never again seeing the sun's light till the end of days
