How many a halt at ruins and traces of old camps

Has failed to cure a sorrowful one of longing’s fierce torment.

Be sparing with reproach, for love overcomes

Patience and brings anguish and grief.

And what troubles you about a companion yearning for

A companion, and a beloved longing for a beloved?

An eye with sleepless lids, kept wakeful by

The beloved’s distance, and a heart that wastes the body.

May the clouds water al-Ghawr’s lands—what a land

    That stirred love!—and al-Ghawr’s days—what a time!

I have found the sons of al-Jarrah possessors of bounty,

Abundant, and possessors of piety in private and public.

A people whose lofty rank was extolled, and who were bequeathed

By Kisra son of Hurmuz a glory whose path is clear.

The lofty heights of the honor they build soar,

As the heights of Thahlan or Hadan rise.

And the buying never ceases in their dwellings:

Full praise, for the full price.

Those who, when we seek refuge in their shade, do

What rain does in its steady downpour.

God bless you! For you are people of noble achievement,

In glory, with well-known landmarks and ways.

Would you, then, grant a favor through which praise grows,

And a blessing whose memory endures through time?

If you grant it, it is not the first of your blessings,

Nor the beginning of your favors to Yemen.

In the days when Anushirwan, your forefather, dispelled

The darkness of humiliation from Sayf ibn Dhi Yazan,

When his cavalry never ceased defending

With thrusts and blows, Sanaa or Aden.

You are sons of the benefactor, the bounteous giver, and we are sons

Of one who won from you immense bounty and favors.

And I have trusted in the hopes I held before,

And my good expectations of al-Hasan in times of need—

A man of surpassing merit who, out of his gallantry, takes refuge

In resolves that have neither weakened nor faltered.

We remain bound to recounting his favors

Upon us, and to thanking him for what he has bestowed.
