فَعَصى المَلامُ لِأَعيُنٍ وَخُدودِ
His ears had grown accustomed to reproach,
His ears were trained in refutation
so he defied blame for the sake of eyes and cheeks.
So blame was disobeyed by eyes and cheeks

He sought denial, steeling himself, but was furnished
He intended ingratitude with endurance, so it supplied him
with witnesses by the flowing lines of his tears.
The negligence of the lines of his tears as witnesses

May the day of parting never have been—nay, nor the one
It was not the day of separation, but there was no one
who proclaimed it and roused all sleepers.
Who called it, yet every bowing one was awed

Were it not for separation, my eye would never have doubted
If not for the separation, my eyelids would not have doubted
sleep's covenant from those familiar days with you.
The era of estrangement in your accustomed time

Days when I bought folly with reason,
I see days where ignorance is bought with prohibition
and deemed the ally of good sense unwise;
And the ally of righteousness is not righteous

I would spend the evening felled by wine in a gathering
Last night I was felled in an assembly
whose sweet basil was the glances from graceful beauties' eye-corners.
Whose joys were moments at the bending of the neck

It boasts of every lad whose pillow
the upper arms of every bashful maiden and bashful youth.
Were the arms of every pliant and pliant one

And for many a torn place whose terror is not confronted
I pierced within it the gloom of black nights,
I tore through the darkness of the black nights

With a despised vehicle for traveling
whose legs were practiced in swift pacing,
Its legs were trained for kneeling

Breaking through the awe of darkness with a poet
like a sword, armored against the terror of deserts,
Like an armored sword against the awe of calamity

Moving on to novelties, no opinion returned to him
in judgment beneath the banner of a lucky weakling.
With the banner of an impotent, spurned one

How many like him were laden, moving

At the offspring of Aaron's son, Sa'eed

Halab has come to extract its bounty through him
after dearth at its sealed frontier.
After barrenness with its blocked mouth

He brought the Euphrates into Syria with a palm
The Euphrates attained peacefully to Syria
raining down his praiseworthy bounty.
With its praised, dangling bucket

His noble deeds draw toward his beneficence
His generosity invites to his kindness
the hope of the destitute and the longing of the hard-pressed.
The hope of the hopeless and the wish of the weary

Effortless in eloquence and clear speech, resourceful,
The facile one of rhetoric and eloquence, the tough
fresh in intellect and understanding, of sturdy timber;
Of argument and understanding, the rigid of will

Of a tribe who preceded kings in their pride
and outstripped every chieftain in generosity.
And advanced in generosity every leader

In their courtyard, generosity planted its banner,
With their demise, magnanimity planted its banner
and valor the sword of victory and aid.
And might, the sword of victory and support

Indeed, Ibn Harun the most courageous, steadfast

Rises like the moon among the stars of good fortune
