يَمزُجُhe mixes خَمراًwine بِجَنىwith the nectar of ريقِهِhis saliva
يَمزُجُ خَمراً بِجَنى ريقِهِ
رَقرَقَهاmade it shimmer الساقيthe cupbearer بِتَصفيفِهِby his arranging
رَقرَقَها الساقي بِتَصفيفِهِ
He mingles wine with the nectar of his saliva;
The cupbearer made it shimmer as he set it out.
كَأَنَّهاas though it مِنfrom طيبِthe sweetness of أَرياقِهِhis saliva
كَأَنَّها مِن طيبِ أَرياقِهِ
شيبَتwas mingled مِنَof المِسكِmusk بِمَفتوقِهِwith its released fragrance
شيبَت مِنَ المِسكِ بِمَفتوقِهِ
It is as though, from the sweetness of his saliva,
it had been mingled with musk, its fragrance released.
ثَمَّةَthere يَسقينيhe gives me drink دِراكاًin quick succession وَقَدand already
ثَمَّةَ يَسقيني دِراكاً وَقَد
صَوَّبَdescended نَجمٌa star بَعدَafter تَحليقِهِits soaring
صَوَّبَ نَجمٌ بَعدَ تَحليقِهِ
There he gives me drink after drink, while
a star has descended after soaring high.
حاسِدَناyou who envy us فيin الحُبِّlove مُتdie حَسرَةًof anguish
حاسِدَنا في الحُبِّ مُت حَسرَةً
سُهِّلَwas made easy دَهرٌfortune بَعدَafter تَعويقِهِits hindering
سُهِّلَ دَهرٌ بَعدَ تَعويقِهِ
You who envy us in love, die of anguish!
Fortune has relented after thwarting us;
وَأُظفِرَand was granted success العاشِقُthe lover مِنfrom بَعدِafter ماthat
وَأُظفِرَ العاشِقُ مِن بَعدِ ما
عَذَّبَهُtormented him البَينُseparation بِمَعشوقِهِwith his beloved
عَذَّبَهُ البَينُ بِمَعشوقِهِ
And the lover has won—after
separation tormented him—his beloved.
ياO رَبَّLord لاdo not تَبلُafflict فَتىًa youth عاشِقاًin love
يا رَبَّ لا تَبلُ فَتىً عاشِقاً
مِنَfrom الَّذيthe one whom يَهوىhe loves بِتَفريقِهِby separating him
مِنَ الَّذي يَهوى بِتَفريقِهِ
O Lord, do not afflict a youth in love
by parting him from the one he loves.
