مُتَعَرِّضٌ لِلهَجرِ وَهوَ جَبانُ

مُتَعَرِّضٌ لِلهَجرِ وَهوَ جَبانُ

وَسِلاحُهُ لِعَدُوِّهِ الهِجرانُ

وَسِلاحُهُ لِعَدُوِّهِ الهِجرانُ

He courts estrangement, though he is a coward,

He exposes himself to abandonment though he is a coward

and estrangement is his weapon against his enemy.

And his weapon against his enemy is alienation

يَصبو إِلى غَضَبي عَلَيهِ تَشَوُّقاً

يَصبو إِلى غَضَبي عَلَيهِ تَشَوُّقاً

فَإِذا غَضِبتُ أَتى بِهِ الإِذعانُ

فَإِذا غَضِبتُ أَتى بِهِ الإِذعانُ

He eagerly longs for me to be angry with him;

He longs for my anger with him expectantly

then, when I grow angry, submission brings him to me.

So when I get angry, he yields

يَهوى هَوايَ ضَميرُهُ فَفُؤادُهُ

يَهوى هَوايَ ضَميرُهُ فَفُؤادُهُ

فَردُ الهَوى وَلِسانُهُ أَلوانُ

فَردُ الهَوى وَلِسانُهُ أَلوانُ

His inmost self desires my love, so his heart

His conscience desires my love but his heart

holds a single love, while his tongue has many colors.

Refuses this love though his tongue pretends
