مِنagainst فِعلِthe deeds of إِسماعيلِهِits Isma‘il اِبنِson of شِهابِهِits Shihab
Has generosity a just judge to grant it redress
For the deeds of its Isma‘il, son of its Shihab?
العارِضِthe rain cloud الثَجّاجِpouring torrents فيin أَخلاقِهِhis character
وَالرَوضَةِand the garden الزَهراءِradiant فيin آدابِهِhis refinement
A rain cloud pouring torrents in his character,
And a radiant garden in his refinement.

وَعُقوقِهِand his disloyalty لِأَخيهِtoward his brother ماwhat أَزرىhas disgraced بِهِhim
His treachery toward his friend has disgraced him,
And his disloyalty to his brother—what shame it has brought him!

Every day, a wait in his forecourt
That humiliates a noble man, and a rebuff from his door.
اِسمَعlisten لِغَضبانٍto an angry man تَثَبَّتَheld himself in check ساعَةًawhile
فَبَداكَso he addressed you first قَبلَbefore هِجائِهِhis satire بِعِتابِهِwith his reproach
Listen to an angry man who held himself in check awhile,
Then addressed you first with reproach, before his satire.
تاللَهِby God يَسهَرُhe stays awake فيin مَديحِكَpraise of you لَيلَهُhis night
مُتَمَلمِلاًrestless وَتَنامُwhile you sleep دونَwithout ثَوابِهِhis reward
By God, he spends his night awake praising you,
Restless, while you sleep without rewarding him.

Wakeful, he selects his words as though they were
An army at his command, with which he means to do battle.
فَأَتىso he brought بِهِit كَالسَيفِlike a sword رَقرَقَmade gleam صَيقَلٌa polisher

ماall that lies بَينَbetween قائِمِthe hilt of سِنخِهِits tang وَذُبابِهِand its point
So he brought it like a sword a polisher had made gleam
From the hilt at its base to its point.
وَحَجَبتَهُyet you denied him audience حَتّىuntil تَوَهَّمَhe imagined أَنَّهُthat he was
هاجٍa satirist أَتاكَwho came to you بِشَتمِهِwith his insults وَسِبابِهِand his abuse
Yet you denied him audience until he imagined he was
A satirist who had come to you with his insults and abuse.
وَإِذاand when الفَتىa young man صَحِبَkeeps company with التَباعُدَaloofness وَاِكتَسىand clothes himself
كِبراًin arrogance عَلِيَّtoward me فَلَستُthen I am not مِنamong أَصحابِهِhis companions
And when a man keeps company with aloofness and clothes himself
In arrogance toward me, I am no companion of his.
وَلَرُبَّand many a مُغرٍone inciting ليme بِعِرضِكَagainst your honor زادَنيhas increased me
غَيظاًin anger بِجَيئَةِwith the coming of قَولِهِhis speech وَذَهابِهِand its going
And many a man inciting me against your honor has increased
My anger with the coming and going of his words.
لَولاwere it not for الصَفاءُsincere friendship وَذِمَّةٌand a pledge أَعطَيتُهاI accorded it
حَقَّthe due of الوَفاءِloyalty قَضَيتُI would have fulfilled مِنsome of آرابِهِhis wishes
But for sincere friendship and a pledge to which I gave
Its due of loyalty, I would have fulfilled some of his wishes.
