أَماdo you not تَرىsee العارِضَthe raincloud المُنهَلَّpouring down دانيهِits near edge
قَدindeed طَبَّقَhas covered الأَرضَthe earth وَاِنحَلَّتand have come unbound عَزاليهِits spouts
Do you not see the pouring rain cloud drawing near?
Do you not see the raincloud, its near edge pouring down?
It has blanketed the earth, and its sluice-mouths have burst open.
It has covered the earth, and its spouts have come unbound.
فَالريحُso the wind تُزجيهِdrives it along تاراتٍat times وَتَحدُرُهُand brings it down
وَالرَعدُand thunder يُنجيهِhurries it onward طَوراًsometimes أَوor يُناجيهِwhispers to it
The wind drives it on by turns, then sweeps it downward;
So the wind drives it along at times and brings it down,
the thunder now calls out to it, now whispers in its ear.
And thunder sometimes hurries it onward, or whispers to it.
يَبكيweeps فَيَضحَكُso laughs وَجهُthe face الأَرضِof the earth عَنrevealing زَهَرٍblossoms
كَالوَشيِlike brocade بَلnay لاnot تَرىyou see وَشياًbrocade يُدانيهِrivals it
It weeps, and the face of the earth smiles forth in blossoms
It weeps, so the earth's face laughs, revealing blossoms,
like brocade—no, you will see no brocade to rival it.
Like brocade—nay, you see no brocade that rivals it.
مازالَkept يَسكُبُpouring سَحّاًin torrents مُسبِلاًshedding غَدَقاًcopious rain
لاnot يَستَفيقُsobers وَليand I have عَينٌan eye تُباريهِvies with it
Still it pours in an unbroken, streaming abundance,
It kept pouring in torrents, shedding copious rain,
never letting up; and I have an eye that rivals it:
Never sobering, while my eye vies with it:
سَحّاًa torrent بِسَحٍّfor a torrent وَإِسبالاًand a pouring بِمُسبَلَةٍfor a downpour
دَمعٌtears يَبوحُdisclose بِشَجوٍa sorrow كُنتُI had been أُخفيهِconcealing it
downpour for downpour, streaming for streaming—
Torrent for torrent, and flowing tears for falling rain.
tears that disclose the grief I used to hide.
Tears disclose a sorrow I had concealed.
ثُمَّthen اِنجَلىcleared away وَدُموعيand my tears غَيرُnot راقِأَةٍceasing
وَالقَلبُand the heart فيهِwithin it مِنَof الأَشجانِsorrows ماwhat فيهِis within it
Then it cleared away, while my tears would not cease,
Then it cleared away, while my tears remained unceasing,
and the heart holds all the sorrows it holds,
And the heart holds what it holds of sorrows,
شَوقاًout of longing إِلىfor رَشَإٍa young gazelle لاnot الشَمسُthe sun تُشبِهُهُresembles him
وَلاnor الهِلالُthe crescent moon إِذاwhen تَمَّتare complete لَياليهِits nights
yearning for a gazelle-fawn whom the sun does not resemble,
Out of longing for a young gazelle whom the sun does not resemble,
nor the crescent when its nights have come to fullness.
Nor the crescent moon when its nights of waxing are complete.
لَكِنَّهُbut he is فِتنَةٌa temptation فيon الأَرضِthe earth عارِضَةٌappearing
يُبليwears out فُؤاديmy heart بِلاwithout جُرمٍwrongdoing وَيُضنيهِand wastes it away
Yet he is an enchantment passing over the earth,
But he is a temptation appearing on earth,
wearing out my heart, though guiltless, and wasting it away.
Wearing out my heart, though it has done no wrong, and wasting it away.
وَقَدand indeed تَبَيَّنَhe has realized أَنّيthat I am مُغرَمٌenamored كَلِفٌpassionately attached
فَاِستَشعَرَso he embraced العُجبَconceit فيin ضَنٍّstinginess وَفيand in تيهِhaughtiness
And now it is plain that I am enthralled, consumed by love;
And he has realized that I am enamored, passionately attached,
so he has donned conceit, withholding himself in haughty disdain.
So he embraced conceit, with stinginess and haughtiness.
