By your life, do you know which of my two states is stranger?
By your life, you know which of my affairs has amazed me.
For both are puzzling, their outward aspect and their hidden one.
They have both become obscure, the apparent and the hidden.

My madness for Layla, while Layla is untroubled by love;
My madness for Layla, though Layla avoids me,
And my inclination toward Su'da, while Su'da keeps away.
And my listening to Sa'd's advice, though Sa'd turns away.

When she dresses, she is the beauty of her dress,
When she is clothed, her clothes are the adornment of her beauty,
And she steals the beholder's wits when she is stripped.
And she captures the heart of the admirer when she is stripped.

And I called her Zainab, fearing people,
And how often Zaynab has hidden a love from people!
And how many loves has Zainab concealed from people!

The greenness of worldly life varies in its arts
The vicissitudes of this ever-changing world;
The punishment of a world that turns about.

And the paradise of eternity tortures us for it
Though I never thought we would be tormented in the gardens of paradise.
And I have not stopped being tortured by paradises.

Ah, many a cup whose choicest wine was served to me
Oh, sometimes a cup whose first sip enchants me,
By one delicate in his swaying, bright-mouthed, with cool white teeth.
Smooth-cheeked, with a cleft lip, pure.

When his fingertips took on some of its deep redness,
When its edges take from its jug,
You saw silver being gilded by the wine.
You see faces in the wine vanishing.

In his hands from its wine vessel, when it was mixed.
Some of its goblets when they are filled.

Indeed, what swiftly seized my mind was what I spent the late night
Would hasten the mind that wanders astray to me
Watching close by—not what I spent the night drinking.
I see from nearby, not the astray one I blame.

In a garden the spring poured out its plants
With bright morning rainclouds, streaming and pouring down.
With a face of tender youth, beginning and pouring.

When the gardener in its sides
Were opening, you imagined gold dinars being minted.
Opens and shuts, coins are struck.

In all earnestness, time's reversals have begun
I find that time, its turns have become harsh
To act in earnest, though we have been playing with time.
Loss, though we play with time.

And fifty years have firmly brought back
And fifty returning the return of decaying
To gray hair one who turned away, fleeing gray hair.
To white hair, he who turns from white hair flees.

Your palace, I wander, confused,
About my own nature, or going wherever I go.
In my manners, or going where I go.

I looked, and the eye's head was shining from me
Its monastery towers—and al-'Asimiyya to the west.
Its minarets the west, the Amawiyyah the east.

At the Khabur bridge: are the people of Manbij
At the bridge of the barley, are the people of Manbij
In Manbij, or have they gone away from it, out of sight?
With Manbij or without it, absent?

The enemies did not remain until they manifested themselves
With a dark mass of troops, its bright swords blazing.
In a black march, their whiteness burning.

When it spread over the earth, its farthest reaches exceeded
When they spread out on earth, their insolence increased
The eye's range, until the weary eye wavered.
On the eye until the eye, confused, swayed about.

And Ibn Bistam, all by himself, spared me
Ibn Bisṭām's isolation from them sufficed me
The need to outnumber the enemies when they banded together.
When they came together in multitudes.

My brother when calamities grow grave; for truly
Brother, in the occurrence of events, but rather
Your brother is the one who brings contentment when you are angry.
Your brother who comes to be pleased when you are angry.

In soft attire he inspires hope and is looked to
It is hoped in the softness of his clothes, and expected
For bounty; in arms he is feared and dreaded.
For his height, and feared in arms, and frightened.

He did not refrain from piercing horses, an advance guard
Into its terrors, by having spent the night writing.
Against fear in them, for he spent the night writing.

The keen swords refer their judgment
Swords that fulfilled their destiny return
To a pen that signals to them where to strike.
To a daily pen, wherever it strikes.

Commander of an army whose tumult subdued the earth,
The marshal of an army that subdued the land in its rebellion
And his resolve is more tumultuous than that army.
And his determination from that army more rebellious.

When a crisis defied discovery of its approach, he found his way
When matters were difficult, to where was its course?
To what should be sought in it or avoided.
To what he intends from it or turns from.

We rely, though bounty is far out of reach,
We depend on, and excellence in it, aloofness
On a lord whose bounty draws near and comes close.
Upon a master who draws near despite aloofness.

On a king whose face avarice does not hide
Upon a king, stinginess does not veil his face
From us; it is the miser's way to stay concealed.
From us, and the trait of the stingy is veiling.

And a fair-faced man: when he delights in giving, there rises
White, ascending when he rests in shade
Upon his face a hue suffused with gladness.
Upon his face a hue of joy imbibed.

Men's dispositions lie idle, while he has
The manners of men are free for him
Cares of glory that burden and weary him.
Busy with glory, helping and erecting.

He has a stirring born of his openhearted generosity,
For him a tremor from his plentiful generosity
At which the barren earth almost grows grass.
Almost makes the barren earth green.

Seekers' packs are set down before a young man
The mounts of those who aspire are lowered to a young man
Whose freely given gifts are spoils for anyone who seeks them.
Whose voluntary gifts are prey to the requiter.

To abundant wealth, the small rights
By small obligations, though he is a seasoned veteran.
Seem paltry to it, and it is accustomed.

Whenever we say a calamity has sobered him,
If we say, and it is acknowledged with complete
He throws himself headlong, compliant in spirit and yielding.
Understanding, the conforming companion is annihilated.

Gifts surpass the furthest limits of reason;
Gifts that exceed the limits of minds
We would almost disbelieve them, were it not for seeing them.
We almost, were it not for seeing, deny.

Bounty that, if we raided it, would be booty,
Bounty, if we are deluded by it, is booty
And its gains pale when it is revisited.
And the booty in it becomes slight when distributed.

Character traits that, had Ziyad encountered their like,
If only Ziyād met the like of its qualities
He would not have said, 'Which man is without fault?'
Then he would not have said, “Who is the most cultivated of men?”

I marvel at him: he has not grown vain with self-admiration,
I am amazed that he has not been tempted by himself
While through him we strut in pride and are filled with admiration.
While we by him are vainglorious, arrogant and amazed.

May you be ransomed, Abu al-'Abbas, from death's calamities
May your life be sacrificed, Abu al-‘Abbas, from the strikes of calamity
By people in whom expectations fail and prove false.
Some people, doubt fails in them and lies.

I have twisted to you the benefactors, and I have not ceased
Turning from them toward you and steering clear.
Twisting to you from them and turning away.

The poems have not turned from you, turning
Nor left any merit to be credited to another.
Or left excellence to other than you to be reckoned.

We string from it pearls in its manner
And a marvel it is to string what is not pierced.
And from wonder, the stringing of what cannot be strung.

Some people would have imagined I was being partisan.
Some people would suspect that I am biased.

When will the deluded by me ask about my decaying?
One who has gained or been disappointed will tell him of it.
An attainer or frustrator will inform him about it.

My passion delights a people and grieves them;
My infatuation in a group delights and grieves them
And what I compose about them, in varied forms and at length, lives on.
And makes what I infatuate in them last and pour forth.

Time has not left other than fair words
Of speech that please listeners and anger them.
That satisfy listeners and anger.
