عَنfrom حُسنِbeauty وَجهِface خَليفَةِcaliph الرَحمَنِthe All-Merciful
And bitterer than my ailments is my gaze's parting
More bitter than my ailment is that my confidant has abandoned me,
From the fair face of the All-Merciful's caliph.
Turning his eyes away from the beauty of the Caliph's face.

Torment comes from Rajab and its Tammuz,
We departed from Rajab and from its July,
And life's pleasure is in Ab and in Sha'ban,
And are living in August and in Sha'ban.

Where the north wind has loosed its tether,
Where the north winds have been unleashed,
And autumn has drawn near with its approaching rain.
And autumn approaches with its gentle rain,
ماwhat لِلمُدامَةِwith the wine بَعدَafter طولِthe length of وِصالِهاits intimacy

Why has the wine, after such long intimacy,
What is left for companionship after its long connection?
Turned away like one estranged and angry?
It has turned away, spurning with anger.

It sought refuge in midsummer's heat and shielded itself with it,
It sought refuge in the heat of summer, thus became inaccessible,
And sought protection in the nearness of Ramadan.
And took protection in the nearness of Ramadan.
فَلَئِنso if indeed سَلِمتُI am spared لِأَروِيَنَّI shall surely give drink to صَحابَتيmy companions

So if I am spared, I shall surely give my companions their fill
So if I survive, I will surely let my friends drink
From every chaste virgin in the wine jars,
From every young, lively mare.

Until I see myself on every dark night
Until I see myself each dark night
Between sober resolve and intoxication.
Between determination and merriment.

The month requires that you forsake all diversions
It is for the month to abandon all vanities in it,
During it, however dear they are to the drinking companion.
Though it was too noble for remorse.

God is a neighbor for the glory-seeker; He is
Is our protector against the misfortunes of every age.
A neighbor for us, from the evil of all eras.

Chosen as caliph for the believers,
The Chosen One is the successor of the faithful,
And approved to safeguard the faith.

مَلِكٌa king نَعُدُّwe reckon العَفوَpardon مِنهُfrom him خَليقَةًa natural trait

A king whose pardon we count a natural trait,
A king whose pardon we consider natural,
And pardon is the best of human traits.
And pardon is the best trait of man.

فيin السِرِّprivate مُجتَهِداًstriving earnestly وَفيand in الإِعلانِpublic
He granted his subjects what they sought of his justice,
He gave the public their request through his justice,
Striving earnestly in private and in public.
Striving in secret and in public.
وَأَنالَهاand bestowed on them مِنfrom سَيبِهِhis bounty وَنَوالِهِand his gifts
أَفضالَfavors لامُكدٍone who does not stint وَلاnor مَنّانِone who reproaches with his gifts
And bestowed on them, from his bounty and his gifts,
And granted them from his sword and generosity
The favors of one who neither stints nor taunts with his gifts.
Bounties without stinginess or favor.

Their hearts were united around him by a pledge of allegiance
Their hearts were united to him in a pledge
That was like the Pledge of Ridwan.
That resembled the Pledge of Contentment.
أُثنيI praise بِأَنعُمِهِfor his favors الَّتيwhich هُوَhe أَهلُهاworthy of them
وَدِراكِand the succession of جَدواهُhis bounty الَّذيwhich أَولانيhe bestowed on me
I praise him for his favors, which befit him,
I praise the favors he deserves,
And for his bounty, bestowed on me time after time.
And attaining his generosity that enriched me.
مَنwho شاكِرٌone who thanks عَنّيon my behalf الخَليفَةَthe caliph فيfor الَّذيwhat
أَولىhe bestowed مِنَof الإِفضالِgenerosity وَالإِحسانِand kindness
Who will thank the caliph on my behalf for what
Who will thank the Caliph on my behalf for what
He has bestowed in bounty and kindness?
Is more deserving of grace and kindness?
حَتّىto the point that لَقَدindeed أَفضَلتُI gave generously مِنfrom أَفضالِهِhis favors
وَرَأَيتُand I saw نَهجَthe path of الجودِgenerosity حينَwhen أَرانيhe showed me
So much so that I too gave generously from his favors,
For I have been graced with his grace,
And I saw the path of generosity when he showed it to me.
And I saw the path of charity when he showed me.
مَلَأَتfilled يَداهُhis two hands يَديmy hand وَشَرَّدَand drove away جودُهُhis generosity

His two hands filled my hand, and his generosity drove away
His hands filled my hands, and his charity
My stinginess, making me poor just as it made me rich.
Scattered my stinginess, impoverishing me as it enriched me.
وَوَثَقتُand I trusted بِالخَلَفِin replenishment الجَميلِhandsome مُعَجَّلاًpromptly granted

And I trusted in prompt and generous replenishment
And I became confident of the good successor, hastening
From him, so I gave away what he had given me.
What he gave me.
