وَمِنand among شِيَميmy traits مُراقَبَةُregard for الثِقاتِthe trustworthy
And a trusted man changed when he grew rich;
One I trusted changed when fortune smiled
And regard for the trustworthy is among my traits.
And it is my way to watch over friends
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him عَتَبتَyou took offense بِغَيرِwithout جُرمٍwrongdoing
فِراراًto escape مِنfrom مَؤوناتِthe costs of العِداتِthe promises
So I told him, 'You took offense though I had done no wrong,
I said, you blame me though I'm innocent
To escape the costs of promises.
To escape costs of reciprocated hate
فَعُدso return لِمَوَدَّتيto my friendship وَعَلَيَّand I undertake أَلّاnot to

So return to my friendship, and I pledge not
Return to friendship and I promise not
To confide any need to you until death.'
To burden you with wants until death parts
