مِcompletes “the clouds” لَيسَthere is not لَهُfor him فيin العُلاthe heights of glory مُؤنِسُa companion
And a man whose palm is like the downpour of clouds
With ease like the breeze in the sky
has no companion in the heights of glory.
He travels onward, lonely,
تَحَمَّلَhe set out نَحوَtoward بِلادِthe lands of الشَآal-Sham (continued next line)
مِcompletes “al-Sham” يَحمِلُهُcarries him مَهمَهٌa trackless desert أَملَسُsmooth
He set out toward the lands of al-Sham,
Journeying homeward, mindful of duty,
borne along by a smooth, trackless desert.
Serene, and pleading hardship no more.
إِذاwhenever مَجَّهُspits him out بَلَدٌa land بَسبَسُvast and desolate
تَلَقَّمَهُswallows him بَلَدٌa land بَسبَسُvast and desolate
Whenever a desolate land spits him out,
The rude wilderness cankers his spirit
another desolate land swallows him.
No more now than yesterday.
أَقولُI say لَهُto him عِندَat تَوديعِناour parting
وَكُلٌّand each بِحاجَتِهِover his need مُبلِسُdespondent
I say to him at our parting,
I said, at our parting, indeed -
while each is despondent over his own need:
Each of us driven on by need.
لَئِنeven if قَعَدَتhave stayed behind عَنكَapart from you أَجسامُناour bodies
لَقَدindeed سافَرَتhave journeyed مَعَكَwith you الأَنفُسُthe souls
Even if our bodies have stayed behind, apart from you,
If we are divided, bodies apart,
our souls have indeed journeyed with you.
Souls, in truth, together depart.
