Am I to be barred after praise, and put off

after a promise? Who would accept these two?

One like me, O Abū Naṣr, does not overlook humiliation

    or abasement in any setting.

Have you made my reward for praising

    you rejection and unending neglect?

And did you slight me because, through prosperity, you became

the sky, while through hardship I became earth?

And are you not the one for whom I professed affection

and to whom I devoted love, pure and unmixed?

O you who delay so much, how often—and for how long—

must I press you to fulfill a promise never kept?

Whenever I go to claim my money from you,

at a trot, you gallop in putting me off.

We have released you from some of what your promise

made due to us, so that you might fulfill a part.

And we have settled for the dinars, so make

them a gift to us—or, if you wish, a loan.

And by mouths like moist pearls

or daisies swaying, fresh and tender,

I shall not turn cold in affection, even if you

have unjustly shown me estrangement and hatred.
