أَلاAh! هَلhas? أَتاهاreached her بِالمَغيبِin absence سَلاميmy greeting
وَهَلand has? خُبِّرَتshe was told وَجديmy longing بِهاfor her وَغَراميand my consuming love
Ah, has my greeting reached her in my absence?
Does my greeting reach her at nightfall,
And has she been told of my longing for her and my consuming love?
And is she told of my love and passion?
وَهَلand has? عَلِمَتshe learned أَنّيthat I ضَنيتُI wasted away وَأَنَّهاand that she
شِفائِيَmy cure مِنfrom داءِthe disease of الضَنىwasting وَسَقاميand my sickness
And has she learned that I have wasted away, and that she is
Does she know that I am her patient,
my cure for the disease of wasting and my sickness?
She, my cure for the sickness of longing and pain?
وَمَهزوزَةٍand a swaying woman هَزَّthe swaying of القَضيبِthe slender bough إِذاwhen مَشَتshe walked
تَثَنَّتshe bent gracefully عَلىwith دَلٍّcoquetry وَحُسنِand beauty of قَواميstature (poetic rhyme ending)
And a woman swaying like a slender bough, who, when she walks,
Swaying as she walks, slender as a branch,
bends with coquetry and the beauty of her figure,
Bending gracefully, shapely and slim.
أَحَلَّتshe declared lawful دَميmy blood مِنfrom غَيرِother than جُرمٍa crime وَحَرَّمَتand she forbade
بِلاwithout سَبَبٍa reason يَومَon the day of اللِقاءِthe meeting كَلاميmy speech
has declared my blood lawful, though I did no wrong, and forbidden
She denied me, though I'm not guilty,
my speech without cause on the day we met.
And refused my words, though no sin did I commit.
فِداؤُكِyour ransom ماwhat أَبقَيتِyou have left مِنّيof me فَإِنَّهُfor indeed it
حُشاشَةُa last spark نَفسٍof life فيwithin نُحولِthe wasting of عِظامِbones
May what you have left of me be your ransom, for it is
Whatever life remains in me is yours,
the last spark of life within emaciated bones.
Though only skin and bones and a breath it be.
صِليgrant union مُغرَماًa love-stricken man قَدindeed واصَلَkept flowing الشَوقُlonging دَمعَهُhis tears
سِجاماًa torrent عَلىupon الخَدَّينِboth cheeks بَعدَafter سِجامِa torrent
Grant union to a lover whose tears longing has kept flowing
Yearning, with tears flowing down my cheeks,
in torrent after torrent down both cheeks.
Pouring like melted lead, beyond stem or dam.
فَلَيسَfor it is not الَّذيwhat حَلَّلتِهِyou declared it lawful بِمُحَلَّلٍlawful at all
وَلَيسَand it is not الَّذيwhat حَرَّمتِهِyou forbade it بِحَرامِforbidden at all
For what you have declared lawful is not lawful,
That which you made lawful was never forbidden,
and what you have forbidden is not forbidden.
And that which you made forbidden, never halal.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَبّاءٌcertainly defiant عَلىagainst كُلِّevery لائِمٍreproacher
عَلَيكِon your account وَعَصّاءٌand disobedient لِكُلِّto every مَلامِreproach
And I stubbornly resist anyone who blames me
I disobey those who blame you,
on your account, and rebel against every reproach.
And rebel against those who criticize and condemn.
وَكُنتُand I would إِذاwhenever حَدَّثتُI spoke to نَفسيmyself بِسَلوَةٍof forgetting love
خَلَعتُI cast off عَذاريmy bridle-strap أَوor فَضَضتُI broke لِجاميmy bridle
And whenever I spoke to myself of forgetting love,
When I speak of being content,
I cast off my bridle-strap or broke my bridle.
I take off my clothes, or rip them in frenzy.
وَأَسبَلتُand I let hang أَثوابيmy robes لِكُلِّfor every عَظيمَةٍmomentous affair
وَشَمَّرتُand I girded myself مِنfrom أُخرىanother لِكُلِّfor every عُرامِreckless venture
And I let my robes hang for every momentous affair,
I humble myself before every fool,
and, in other pursuits, girded myself for every wild exploit.
And stand tall before every villain.
هَلِis? العَيشُlife إِلّاanything but ماءُjuice كَرمٍof the vine مُصَفَّقٌwell-decanted
يُرَقرِقُهُmakes it shimmer فيin الكَأسِthe cup ماءُwater غَمامِof clouds
Is life anything but well-decanted juice of the vine,
What is life but a draft of generous wine,
which cloud-water makes shimmer in the cup,
With tears mixing into the cup like rain?
وَعودُand the lute of بَنانٍBanan حينَwhen ساعَدَaccompanied شَجوَهُits plaintive music

and Banan's lute, when its plaintive music is accompanied
The music of the reed flute stirs up our longing,
in melodious strains by Zunam's flute?
Accompanied by the wailing melodies of the lute.
أَبىrefused يَومُناour day بِالزَوِّaboard al-Zaww إِلّاanything but تَحَسُّناًgrowing lovelier
لَناfor us بِسَماعٍwith music طَيِّبٍpleasant وَمُدامِand wine
Our day aboard al-Zaww would only grow lovelier
This day our pleasure is but to hear singing,
for us, with sweet music and wine.
Sweet music, and keep company with wine.
غَنيناwe lived at ease عَلىupon قَصرٍa palace يَسيرُmoving بِفِتيَةٍwith young men
قُعودٍseated عَلىalong أَرجائِهِits sides وَقِيامِand standing
We lived at ease on a palace that moved, carrying young men
We sing in a castle, strolling its corners,
seated along its sides, and standing.
Some of us sitting, and some of us standing.
تَظَلُّkeep البُزاةُthe hawks البيضُthe white تَخطِفُsnatching حَولَناaround us

The white hawks keep snatching all around us
White pigeons flutter around us,
the breasts of birds roaming through the sky.
Darting through the sky like arrows.

They swoop down with francolins from every lofty height,
The partridges glide down the hillside,
bloodied, their talons stained.
Their claws tinted red as if with henna.
فَلَمso not أَرَI have seen كَالقاطولِlike al-Qatul يَحمِلُcarries ماؤُهُits water

تَدَفُّقَthe surging of بَحرٍa sea بِالسَماحَةِwith generosity طامِoverflowing
So I have never seen the like of al-Qatul, whose waters bear
Never did I see, like my beloved, the rain waters
the surge of a sea overflowing with bounty,
Gushing through the valley with such grace and vigor,
وَلاnor جَبَلاًa mountain كَالزَوِّlike al-Zaww يوقَفُis halted تارَةًat times

وَيَنقادُand yields إِمّاif ever قُدتَهُyou lead it بِزَمامِwith a rein
nor a mountain like al-Zaww, halted at times,
Nor a mountain, like my love, standing firm at times,
and yielding when you lead it by a rein.
Then tamed, led gently by the reins.
لَقَدindeed جَمَعَhas gathered اللَهُGod المَحاسِنَthe virtues كُلَّهاall of them

لِأَبيَضَfor a fair man مِنfrom آلِthe family of النَبِيِّthe Prophet هُمامِvaliant
God has indeed gathered every virtue
God combined all beauty in this fair-faced one,
for a fair, valiant man from the Prophet's house.
A brilliant moon from the family of the Prophet.
نُطيفُwe gather بِطَلقِaround one cheerful الوَجهِof face لاnot مُتَجَهِّمٍscowling

We gather around one cheerful of face, not one who scowls
Gentle with us, not frowning or withholding generosity,
at us, nor a rainless cloud whose gifts are scant.
Nor being stingy in his overflowing favors.

What endears him to his subjects is that he
The people love him for protecting
defends their frontiers and protects them,
And defending the land’s borders from all sides.

and that he has tenderness and compassion for them,
For he has tenderness and mercy towards them,
and abundant favors, immense in their bounty.
And his hands pour forth goodness bountifully.

إِلىto صارِمٍa keen blade فيduring النائِباتِcalamities حُسامِa cutting sword
Islam has indeed sought refuge from Ja'far's sword
When Ja’far’s sword failed to defend the faith,
in a keen blade—a cutting sword in calamities.
The keen blade of al-Husayn became its protector.

By it the frontier whose breach is feared is secured,
With it he mends the fearful breach,
even if enemies assail it in every possible way.
Should the enemy dare to dream of violating its sanctity.

بِأَنَّكَthat you عِندَin the sight of اللَهِGod خَيرُthe best إِمامِimam
We pray, and what completes our prayer is our conviction
We pray, confident that you are, in God’s eyes,
that, in God's sight, you are the best of imams.
The best of all Imams to lead us aright.

Our hearts incline to you, O Trustee of God,
with the devotion of those who yearn for you, mad with love.
With sincere passion and steadfast devotion.

By my prayers, devotions, and fast sincerely kept -

you have indeed guarded God's religion with the finest protection,
You have best protected God’s religion,
and upheld God's command in the finest manner.
And staunchly stood for the way of the Lord.
