صَحَوتُI sobered up وَزايَلَنيand left me باطِليmy folly

لَعَمرُby the life of أَبيكَyour father زِيالاًa parting طَويلاlong
لَعَمرُ أَبيكَ زِيالاً طَويلا
I sobered up, and my folly left me—
I woke up and my vain thoughts left me
by your father's life, for a long while.
By the life of your father they were prolonged companions
وَأَصبَحتُand I have become لاnot نَزِقاًrash بِاللِحاءِin quarrelling
وَأَصبَحتُ لا نَزِقاً بِاللِحاءِ
وَلاnor لِلُحومِof the flesh of صَديقيmy friend أَكولاa voracious eater
وَلا لِلُحومِ صَديقي أَكولا
And I am no longer rash in quarrels,
And I became, seeking no food or meat
nor a voracious eater of my friend's flesh.
My friend, that I would eat
وَلاnor سابِقيeluding me كاشِحٌa spiteful foe نازِحٌfar away
وَلا سابِقي كاشِحٌ نازِحٌ

بِذَحلٍ إِذا ما طَلَبتُ الذُحولا
Nor can a distant, spiteful foe elude me
Nor a racing horse, impetuous and swift
over a blood-debt, when I seek vengeance.
With slender legs, when I sought amusement

So now I have prepared for misfortunes
So I prepared to face misfortunes
unsullied honor and a sharp, polished sword,
With a pure reputation and polished rage

and a tongue's stroke like a spearhead's edge,
And a sharp tongue like the edge of blades
and a supple, long-shafted spear,
And a long speared lance that flows easily

and a full-length coat of fine mail—
And a generous steed from excellent stock
you hear the sword ring in it—
That you hear the sword ringing in it

like the pool's water stirred by the west wind;
Like the water of a pool dragged by the winds
the fully armored man drags its trailing lengths.
Pulling overflowing floods within it
