كمhow many ليلةٍa night غبتyou were absent والهاجوسand the haunting thought يلعبtoys بيwith me
O you who have forgotten time, while our hearts count it.
O you who forgot time and our hearts counting it
How many nights you were away while brooding thoughts toyed with me.
How many nights have I been absent with obsession playing with me
لاnot انتyou معwith القلبthe heart يالغاليO dear one ولاnor ضدهagainst it
كلهall of it سوىthe same راحتيmy comfort والاor تعبweariness قلبيmy heart
You are neither on the heart's side, dear one, nor against it.
You are neither with nor against my heart, O most precious one
It is all the same—my comfort or my heart's weariness.
It is all the same, except for my comfort or the toiling of my heart

خبرتhave you known قلبٍa heart منfrom اللوعاتthe pangs of longing ينحبيsobs
My heart flows down both cheeks, and I hold it back.
My heart flows down my cheeks.. a rose water
Have you known a heart that sobs from the pangs of longing?
A heart experienced sorrows that make me ache
وانand if قلتI said لاno بدescape يبردit cools زادتincreased الشدهthe anguish

And when I say it is bound to cool, the anguish grows worse.
And if I say there must be a cooling, the passion increases
I have suffered because of you, and I bring my complaint to my Lord.
I am wretched because of you, and my complaint is to my Lord

O you whose cheek, when it appears, makes the moon vanish.
O you whose absence makes the moon disappear, not from his cheek
Beauty is yours; as for me, my sin is too much longing.
The beauty is your beauty, and I have many sins

Whoever embraces the sword is bound to be wounded by its cheek.
Whoever embraces a sword, his cheek is bound to be wounded
And whoever loves embers—the fire flares within him.
And whoever loves embers, in him the fire will kindle
