فَصِرتُ أَمسِكُ عَن أَوصافَ نِعمَتِهِ

فَصِرتُ أَمسِكُ عَن أَوصافَ نِعمَتِهِ

عَجزاً وَيَنطِقُ مِن آثارِها حالي

عَجزاً وَيَنطِقُ مِن آثارِها حالي

So I now refrain from describing his bounty,

I have become unable to describe His blessings,

Unable to do it justice, while my condition speaks through its effects.

Silent in awe, while my state speaks of their traces,

لَمّا تَحَصَّنتُ مِن دَهري بِمَعقِله

لَمّا تَحَصَّنتُ مِن دَهري بِمَعقِله

سَمَت بِحَملانَهُ أَلحاظُ إِقبالي

سَمَت بِحَملانَهُ أَلحاظُ إِقبالي

When I took refuge from my fate in his stronghold,

When I took refuge from fate in His stronghold,

With his gifts of mounts, my good fortune's gaze rose high.

My days turned toward prosperity before my very eyes,

وَواصَلَتني صِلاتٌ مِنهُ رِحتُ بِها

وَواصَلَتني صِلاتٌ مِنهُ رِحتُ بِها

أَختالُ ما بَينَ عِزِّ الجاهِ وَالمالِ

أَختالُ ما بَينَ عِزِّ الجاهِ وَالمالِ

And gifts from him kept reaching me; with them I went

And connections to Him have sustained me, in which

Strutting amid the glory of rank and wealth.

I proudly swagger between power, wealth, and status,

فَليَنظُرِ الدَهرُ عُقبى ما صِرتُ لَهُ

فَليَنظُرِ الدَهرُ عُقبى ما صِرتُ لَهُ

إِذ كانَ مِن بَعضِ حُسّادي وَعُذّالي

إِذ كانَ مِن بَعضِ حُسّادي وَعُذّالي

So let Time behold the outcome I have reached,

So let fate behold what I have become through it

Since it was among my enviers and reproachers.

When I was the target of some envious foes,

أَلَم أَكِدهُ بِحُسنِ الأَنتِظارِ إِلى

أَلَم أَكِدهُ بِحُسنِ الأَنتِظارِ إِلى

أَن صُنتُ حَظّي عَن حَلٍّ وَتِرحالِ

أَن صُنتُ حَظّي عَن حَلٍّ وَتِرحالِ

Did I not outwit it through patient waiting until

Did I not wear it down with excellent patience

I shielded my fortune from settling and journeying?

Until I shielded my fortune from decline and homelessness?

بَلَغتُ مالاً يَجوزُ السُؤلَ نائِلَهُ

بَلَغتُ مالاً يَجوزُ السُؤلَ نائِلَهُ

وَلا يُدافِعُ عَن فَضلٍ وَإِفضالِ

وَلا يُدافِعُ عَن فَضلٍ وَإِفضالِ

I attained wealth whose bounty surpasses desire,

I have attained a wealth whose seeker is praised

And he holds back neither favors nor generosity.

And which defends from superiority and favoritism,

يا عارِضاً لَم أَشُم مَذ كُنتُ بارِقُهُ

يا عارِضاً لَم أَشُم مَذ كُنتُ بارِقُهُ

إِلا رَوَيتُ بَغَيثٍ مِنهُ هَطّالِ

إِلا رَوَيتُ بَغَيثٍ مِنهُ هَطّالِ

O rain cloud, whose lightning I have never watched in all my life,

O critic, since you appeared I have not smelled

Without drinking my fill of its torrential rain.

A cloudburst except that I drank deep of its pouring,

رُوَيدَ جَودِكَ قَد ضاقَت بِهِ هِمَمي

رُوَيدَ جَودِكَ قَد ضاقَت بِهِ هِمَمي

وَرَدَّ عَنّي بِرَغمِ الدَهرِ إِقلالي

وَرَدَّ عَنّي بِرَغمِ الدَهرِ إِقلالي

Ease your generosity; my aspirations have grown too narrow for it,

Your rain of generosity has poured—my resolve is too narrow for it,

And it has driven my poverty away, in defiance of Time.

And turned back from me the lessening of fate against my will,

لَم يَبقَ لي أَملٌ أَرجو نِداكَ بِهِ

لَم يَبقَ لي أَملٌ أَرجو نِداكَ بِهِ

دَهري لِأَنَّكَ قَد أَفنَيتَ آمالي

دَهري لِأَنَّكَ قَد أَفنَيتَ آمالي

No hope remains for me through which to seek your bounty

No hopes remain that I might plead with you through them,

In my lifetime, for you have already exhausted my hopes.

Since you have destroyed all my hopes, my lifetime.
