مِن كُلِّ مُتَّسِعِ الأَخلاقِ مُبتَسِم

مِن كُلِّ مُتَّسِعِ الأَخلاقِ مُبتَسِم

لِلخَطبِ إِن ضاقَت الأَخلاقُ وَالحيلُ

لِلخَطبِ إِن ضاقَت الأَخلاقُ وَالحيلُ

Of every broad-natured man, smiling

With the broadest of good manners he smiles

at calamity, if tempers and stratagems are strained.

In the face of adversity, when good manners and stratagems fail

يَسعى بِهِ البَرقُ إِلا أَنَّهُ فَرَسٌ

يَسعى بِهِ البَرقُ إِلا أَنَّهُ فَرَسٌ

في صورَةِ المَوتِ إِلا أَنَّهُ رَجُلُ

في صورَةِ المَوتِ إِلا أَنَّهُ رَجُلُ

Lightning bears him onward, save that it is a horse;

The lightning pursues him, though he is but a horse

in the form of Death, save that he is a man.

In the guise of death, though he is but a man

يَلقى الرِماحَ بِصَدرٍ مِنهُ لَيسَ لَهُ

يَلقى الرِماحَ بِصَدرٍ مِنهُ لَيسَ لَهُ

ظَهرٌ وَهادي جَوادٍ مالَهُ كَفَلُ

ظَهرٌ وَهادي جَوادٍ مالَهُ كَفَلُ

He meets the spears with a chest of his that has

He encounters spears with a chest that has no

no back, and with the neck of a steed that has no rump.

Backing, and leads a steed though it has no shoulders
