In forbearance lies what restrains kinsfolk

    from what contravenes just judgments.

    O my eye—it pains me to be troubled by a mote—and O

my heart—and how could I frighten it with reproach?

I shall surely reproach you, sparing you and seeking to set things right,

before the sword-blades, in the language of pens.

You deliberately angered a state by mistreating me,

which I strengthened, aiding it through my faithful service.

If you are its champion, then I am its sword.

And killing is satisfied with nothing but a sharp sword.

And in your palm is the keen sword that is me—so tend it

with care, and do not be tricked out of the keen sword.

Among your enemies outside the family, you have something to distract you

from the acts by which you wrong your kinsfolk.
