I was safeguarded by you with what never crossed my mind;

I have preserved from you what has never occurred in my mind

So now I excuse those who envy me for envying me.

So now I excuse my enviers for their envy

سماح كف إذا ما شمت بارقه

سماح كف إذا ما شمت بارقه

نابت زيادته عن أن اقول زد

نابت زيادته عن أن اقول زد

A hand's generosity—whenever I glimpsed its lightning,

The generosity of your palm, if its lightning is suspected

Its abundance spared me from saying, 'Give more.'

Its growth exceeds my ability to say, increase!

وذمة الدهر معتصماً

وذمة الدهر معتصماً

بما تلقيته فرداً بلا مدد

بما تلقيته فرداً بلا مدد

And Time's pledge of protection, as I sought refuge

And I take refuge in the covenant of time

In what I received, alone, without aid.

With what I have received as an individual without allies

فأي موهبةٍ لم أحو أشرفها

فأي موهبةٍ لم أحو أشرفها

عفواً وفائدة بالفضل لم أفد

عفواً وفائدة بالفضل لم أفد

So what gift have I not gained in its noblest form,

So what gift have I not attained the noblest of it

Unasked—and what benefit have I not gained through bounty?

Forgiveness and benefit, through merit I did not benefit

أيا أبا صالحٍ أصلحت من زمني

أيا أبا صالحٍ أصلحت من زمني

فعاد فاسده لي غير منفسد

فعاد فاسده لي غير منفسد

O Abu Salih, you have set right my lot,

O Abu Salih, you reformed an era of mine

So what was spoiled in it became sound for me.

Yet its corruption returned to me without reforming

تركت دهري وقدماً كان يلحظني

تركت دهري وقدماً كان يلحظني

شزراً يلاحظني من مقلتي رمدِ

شزراً يلاحظني من مقلتي رمدِ

You left my fate—which once looked at me

I left my time, and it had been an era that observed me

Askance—now gazing at me through two sore eyes.

With contempt, observing me from the wetness of my eyelid’s mucus
