وَاليَومُand the day مِنfrom غَسَقِthe darkness of العَجاجَةِthe dust cloud لَيلَةًa night
وَالكرُّand the charge يَخرُقُrends سَجفَهاits veil المَمدوداoutstretched
And day is night in the dust cloud's darkness,
The day now from the dusk of battle night
And the charge rends its outstretched veil.
And darkness rends its outstretched canopy
وَعَلىand upon الصِفاحِthe sword-blades مِنَfrom الكِفاحِcombat وَصِدقِهِand its earnestness

And on the sword-blades, from combat and its earnestness,
And on the plains, from strife and truthfulness
terror turned their whiteness rose-red.
Terror made its whiteness turn to redness
وَالطَعنُand spear-thrusts يَغتَصِبُrob الجِيادَthe steeds شِياتَهاtheir markings
وَالضَربُand blows يَقدَحُstrike sparks فيin التَريكِthe helmets وَقوداfire
And spear-thrusts rob the steeds of their markings,
And the thrust robs the steeds of their vigor
And blows kindle fire in the helmets.
And the blow sparks flames in the armor’s fuel
وَعَلىand over النُفوسِthe souls مِنَfrom الحَمامِdeath طَلائِعٌadvance guards

وَالخَوفُand fear يَنشُدُseeks صَبرَهاtheir fortitude المَفقوداlost
And over souls are death's advance guards,
And to the souls, from the battle, outriders
And fear seeks their lost fortitude.
And fear recites their lost composure
وَقَدand indeed اِستَحالَhas become البَرُّthe land بَحراًa sea وَالضُحىand midmorning

لَيلاًnight وَمُنخَرِقُand the open expanse الفَضاءِof space حَديداiron
And land has turned to sea, and midmorning
The land transformed to sea and dawn to night
to night, and the open expanse of space to iron.
The firmament now ripped with iron searing
وَأَجَلّand the greatest ماwhat عِندَavailable to الفَوارِسِthe horsemen حَثُّهاtheir urging

And the best the horsemen could do was spur
And the cavaliers hasten their steeds the most
the long-necked steeds, in obedience to flight.
To obey the flight, leading the mounts ahead

Until the passion left wisdom behind
and certainty became a witness against conjectures,
And certainty laid doubts down slain
