بَلَوتُI tested الناسَpeople قَرناًa generation بَعدَafter قَرنٍa generation
بَلَوتُ الناسَ قَرناً بَعدَ قَرنٍ
فَلَمso did not أَرَI see غَيرَother than خَلّابٍa deceiver وَقالِand a hater
فَلَم أَرَ غَيرَ خَلّابٍ وَقالِ
I have tested people, generation after generation,
I tested people, generation after generation,
And found none but deceivers and haters.
So I saw none but deceivers and haters.
وَذُقتُand I tasted مَرارَةَthe bitterness of الأَشياءِthings جَمعاًall together
وَذُقتُ مَرارَةَ الأَشياءِ جَمعاً
فَماso no طَعمٌtaste أَمَرُّmore bitter مِنَthan السُؤالِbegging
فَما طَعمٌ أَمَرُّ مِنَ السُؤالِ
I have tasted the bitterness of all things,
And I tasted the bitterness of all things:
But no taste is more bitter than having to ask.
No taste is more bitter than begging.
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see فيamong الخُطوبِcalamities أَشَدَّmore intense هَولاًin terror
وَلَم أَرَ في الخُطوبِ أَشَدَّ هَولاً
وَأَصعَبَand harder مِنthan مُعاداةِenmity with الرِجالِmen
وَأَصعَبَ مِن مُعاداةِ الرِجالِ
Among calamities, I have seen nothing more terrifying,
And among calamities I saw nothing more dreadful
And nothing harder than enmity with men.
Or harder than enmity with men.
