دَعَيتُمyou claimed أَنَّناthat we لَكُمُbelonging to you قَطينٌservants
وَقَولُand speech of الفَخرِboasting يَخلِطُهُtaints it الفُجورُfalsehood
You claimed that we were your servants;
You claimed that we are submissive to you
And boastful speech is tainted by falsehood.
Yet boasting is mixed with immorality
جَرَيتُمyou ran on لَيسَis not ذالِكُمُthat كَذاكُمlike that
وَلَكِنّاbut we are رَحىًa millstone بِكُمُupon you تَدورُturns
You have gone too far; that is not so.
You acted not knowing the truth
But we are a millstone that turns upon you.
Rather we are a mill that grinds you
وَلَوand if رامَتsought جموعُكُمُyour armies بِلاديmy land
إِذَنthen كَرَّتwould return رَحاناour millstone تَستَديرُrevolving
And if your armies sought my land,
Had your groups desired my country
Then our millstone would turn again, whirling.
Our leverage would have spun around
فَلَلناwe blunted حَرَّكُمyour fury بِلَوىat the sandy bend of قَديسٍQadis
وَلَمand did not تَسلَمَescape unharmed هُنالِكَthere بَهرَسيرُBahrasir
We blunted your fury at the sandy bend of Qadis,
We had inspired you with a sacred fervor
Nor did Bahrasir escape unharmed there.
Yet there the lieutenants did not escape
فَتَحتُI conquered البَهرَسيرَBahrasir بِإِذنِby the leave of رَبّيmy Lord
وَأَعدَتنيand aided me عَلىin ذاكَthat الأُمورُcircumstances
I conquered Bahrasir by my Lord's leave,
I opened the dam by the will of my Lord
And circumstances aided me in that.
And that prepared me for such matters
وَقَدand indeed عَضّواthey bit الشِفاهَthe lips لِيُهلِكوناto destroy us
وَدونَand before القَومِthe men مِهراءٌcrushing جَرورُdrawing along
And they bit their lips, intent on destroying us;
They clenched their teeth trying to destroy us
Before those men stood a crushing mill, drawing them in.
With flimsy shields they attacked
وَطارواand they took flight قِضَّةًscattered وَلَهُمand they had زَئيرٌa roar
إِلىto دارٍan abode وَلَيسَand there was no بِهاin it نَصيرُhelper
And they took flight, scattered, roaring,
They flew off angrily with a roar
To an abode where there was no helper.
To a house with no defender
