أَلاListen! أَبلِغاyou two, convey عَنّيfrom me العُرَيبَthe Arabs (diminutive) رِسالَةًa message
فَقَدfor indeed قَسَمَتwere divided فيناamong us فُيوءَspoils الأَعاجِمِthe non-Arabs
Listen, you two: convey a message from me to the Arabs.
For the foreigners’ spoils have indeed been divided among us.
وَدَرَّتand flowed abundantly عَلَيناto us جِزيَةَtribute القَومِthe people بِالَّذيin return for that which
فَكَكناwe loosened بِهِwith it عَنهُمfrom them وِثاقَbonds المَعاصِمِthe wrists
And the people’s tribute flowed to us in return for that
With which we loosened the bonds from their wrists.
فَنَحنُfor we أَفَأناwe gained booty بِالفُراتِby the Euphrates وَأَرضِهِand its land
جَميعاًall together وَلَمand did not نَعدِلwe deem equal بِحَزِّto cleaving المَقادِمِforeheads
For we won booty by the Euphrates and in its land,
All together, and held nothing equal to cleaving foreheads.
وَحَيثُand where نَهىheld back اللُجمِيَّal-Lujmī عَنfrom دِجلَةِthe Tigris السُرىnight marching
وَرَدَّand returned إِلَيناto us غَربَهاits western side بِالطُماطِمِwith the foreign-tongued men
And where night marching held al-Lujmī back from the Tigris,
And restored its western side to us, together with the foreign-tongued men.
